Turkish Intercontinental Derby, take it or leave it! In the life-or-death matchday 31 of Turkish Super League, the reigning champions and league leaders Galatasaray hosted their fierce local rivals Fenerbahce in RAMS Park.

The historic and world-wide-known rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce kindles once again, as we’re getting closer to the end of Turkish Super League 2025/2026 season. In the modern history of Turkish football, the fierce rivals are facing each other for the 173rd time. The Lions won 58 of the 172 games, the Canaries prevailed in 61 of them and the remaining 54 games ended in a draw. Coming into the matchday 31, Okan Buruk’s Gala is leading the way with a 4-points gap against Fenerbahce. A derby victory would give them their first matchball to reach the title next week against Samsunspor away. Meanwhile, the gap would shrink to a point and refill their hopes, if Tedesco’s Canaries prevail at their rivals’ home. Both teams are out of form and knocked out of the Turkish Cup recently, so a derby victory is essential for both sides with Turkish football’s most prized possession on the line. Before the big game, the returning players are the attention. For the first time since his injury against Liverpool in the Champions League, Victor Osimhen is expected to return to the Lions’ starting eleven. The Canaries may also welcome Marco Asensio and Sidiki Chérif back to their side. So, without further ado, let’s see the starting line-ups ahead of the Intercontinental Derby:
Galatasaray XI: Cakir - Sallai - Sánchez - Bardakci - Jakobs - Lemina - Torreira - Sané - Akgün - Yilmaz - Osimhen
Fenerbahce XI: Ederson - Semedo - Škriniar - Oosterwolde - Brown - Kanté - Guendouzi - Nene - Talisca - Aktürkoglu - Chérif

First Half
In the first 10 minutes of the game, Fenerbahce started aggressively on rival turf to find an early goal and get themselves a golden opportunity in the 10th minute. Sidiki Chérif dribbles the through ball he received from Guendouzi and is fouled by Davinson Sánchez in the penalty box. However, Anderson Talisca throws away their opportunity, as his penalty kick fails to find the target. With the discouraging penalty miss, the momentum shifts to the hosts. About 10 minutes later, this time Leroy Sané was down in the Canaries’ box, but despite the intense objections of the Gala players, a penalty decision wasn't given.
During the arguments on this position, Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson sees a yellow card. The hosts break the dreadlock in the 40th minute, when Lemina headers Jakobs’ long throw towards Osimhen, who struggles to control the ball first, but sends it into the net with a kick of his knee. The Canaries tries to react fast to equalise before the halftime, but Talisca’s effort from outside of the box hits the post. So, the first half ends 1-0 with the Lions leading the way. The first half could have been a different story, if the Canaries made their chances work, not to mention one of them was a penalty kick. Missed opportunities gave Galatasaray more confidence and adding that to the home crowd support, the Lions eventually found the opening goal.

Second Half
Fenerbahce tries to start the second half similarly aggressive to the first half, but this time Gala don’t let them be effective and take the control early. Galatasaray warn their rivals with two disallowed goals by Osimhen and Torreira, but the breaking point comes in the 60th minute. Yunus Akgün is brought down in the Fenerbahce box this time and the referee gives the penalty. Despite the referee's warnings, Ederson fails to comply with the decision and in the end, the Brazilian glove is sent off. After minutes of discussions and substitutions, Baris Alper Yilmaz finally takes the kick and scores in his 200th match for Galatasaray. The Canaries attempted to answer with the new-sub Ismail Yüksek, who received a through ball from Nélson Semedo.
However his close-distance shot is parried outside by Ugurcan Cakir. Gala put Fenerbahce under pressure with set pieces towards the end and they found a third goal from a corner. Goalkeeper Mert Günok, who was subbed in after Ederson’s red card, leaves his goal to collect the ball mid-air, but as he lands, he collides with his teammate Archie Brown and drops the ball right in front of Lucas Torreira. The experienced Uruguayan midfielder doesn’t turn down this gift and extends the Lions’ lead to three in the 83rd minute. In the remaining time, both teams fail their scoring attempts and the derby ends with a 3-0 score in favour of the hosts.

With this result and also Trabzonspor’s latest defeat against Konyaspor, Galatasaray can clinch the title next week for the 4th season in a row, equalling their own league record. The Lions battled as a unit, used their home advantage well and took even more advantage of the wasteful and disorganised Fenerbahce. The Canaries didn’t seem to have the right mentality to take the championship fight against the league leaders. The missed chances and Ederson’s behaviour in the match resulted in a humiliating defeat and almost a fatal hit to their title hopes. With 3 more games left to play, Fenerbahce can only hope for a miracle slip up now, as the Lions march towards their 26th Turkish Super League title.

In a nutshell, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce faced each other in another crucial Intercontinental Derby and the Lions emerged victorious. We’ll see how Gala will use their matchballs and how the Canaries respond from next week on.
