The first leg of the champions league quarter finals between FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid took place on Wednesday this past week on April 8, 2026 at Barcelona’s Camp Nou. The match saw Atlético Madrid victorious with a 2-0 finish against FC Barcelona.

FC Barcelona had a strong start with multiple attempts on Atlético’s goals with the closest one being in the first half when Marcus Rashford scored an assist from Lamine Yamal. However, Yamal's position during the assist was deemed offside and the goal was disallowed. There were several other attempts to score by FC Barcelona but none were successful.
Giuliano Simeone playing for Atlético seemed to be through on goal when Pau Cubarsi seemingly tripped him causing the midfielder to fall to the ground. Atlético was awarded a free kick and Cubarsi was given a yellow card for the challenge. However, things escalated quickly from there when VAR recommended an on-field review of Cubarsi’s move on Simeone for a potential red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity. VAR review resulted in Cubarsi’s yellow card being upgraded to a red and him being sent off the field, forcing Barcelona to continue the match with only 10 players on the pitch.
In minute 44 Atlético’s Julián Alvarez took the free kick and scored bringing the score to 1-0 just before half-time. At the start of the second half Flick made the decision to replace Lewandovski and Petri with Gavi and Fermin Lopez. With FC Barcelona playing with only 10 players they were unable to produce any goals, though they managed to defend against Atlético until with just 20 minutes to the end of the game Alexander Sorloth scored a second goal bringing the score to 2-0.
