Sarina Wiegman, manager of the England Women’s national football team, has just been nominated for the Johan Cruyff Trophy, awarded to the best manager of the previous season for both men’s and women’s football. This came as a result of her tremendous efforts and success with the Lionesses in this year’s Women’s Euros to retain their title.

Who will Sarina be competing against for the award?

Sarina’s competitors in the Women’s Team category of the Johan Cruyff Trophy are Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, Brazil boss Arthur Elias, Justine Madugu of the Nigerian women’s team, and Renee Slegers of Arsenal.

Why does Sarina deserve the award?

Simply put, Wiegman is the most successful England manager, possessing the highest win rate across both men’s and women’s managers (69.6%) and losing only 9 of the 69 matches she has overseen with England.

She led England’s Lionesses to victory in the UEFA Women’s EURO Championship in 2022 and 2025. She also guided the Lionesses to the FIFA World Cup Final in 2023 against Spain.

Other achievements include being the only manager to win back-to-back Women’s EURO titles with different nations (Netherlands 2017, England 2022/2025). Further, she also won the Best FIFA Women’s Coach and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award, demonstrating why she most certainly deserves to add the Johan Cruyff Trophy to her collection of silverware.

While she is highly impactful pitchside with her tactical leadership, strategic thinking and ability to foster an unbreakable team spirit, her cultural impact cannot be forgotten. Wiegman’s work has helped to significantly boost the profile and popularity of Women’s football in England and the Netherlands, while also increasing the worldwide media coverage, commercial revenue and fan engagement for the sport.
