BREAKING: F1 Extends Contract with Barcelona-Catalunya

The Barcelona Grand Prix will remain on the F1 calendar until 2031 in a yearly rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix held at the fan-favourite Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The circuit has extended its contract to 2032 in a multi-year contract for races in 2028, 2030, and 2032. Previously named the “Spanish Grand Prix”, the title was lost to the Madrid race. The race on the calendar will now be addressed as the “Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix”.  

The contract extension with the track has sparked some controversy amongst the fans, with many unhappy about the track being in rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix - a favourite amongst all motorsport fans. Many argue that the number of races in the United States is “unnecessary”, stating they would rather have more traditional circuits such as Emilia-Romagna (Imola) and Hockenheim. Furthermore, fans protest that they’d rather Madrid be removed from the calendar entirely, giving leeway for both Barcelona and Spa to share the calendar yearly.  

Overall, the contract extension may benefit the structure of the racing calendar - but does it benefit the fans’ contentment?
