The Danish badminton player has made persistent attempts to prolong his career, but at just 32 years of age has made the final call for his body.

Axelsen has won every major title in both team and individual events at least once, except the Sudirman Cup. His most standout achievements include winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympic Games, bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and being a four-time European champion. His time in the world of professional badminton has come to an end, after a remarkable career.

"Since the day I picked up a racket, I knew my dream was to become the best in the world." He says on his Instagram, which he accomplished after holding the No. 1 BWF World Ranking in men's singles, and having it for 183 weeks until it ended in August 2024.

Viktor Axelsen has suffered from a persistent back injury and even went into endoscopic surgery to repair a herniated disc - a procedure used to treat damage to the spine that can cause pain and limit mobility.

The pain continued even after the surgery, which is why on April 15, 2025 he made the decision to focus on his long-term health and retire.
