Christian Lundgaard Takes Inaugural Win In Papaya In A Chaotic Sonsio Grand Prix

Alex Palou dominated the opening stages of the Sonsio Grand Prix; but, after multiple cautions altered the winning strategies, Arrow McLaren and Christian Lundgaard capitalized with an aggressive late-race charge and undercut to claim victory at IMS.
Qualifying Results:
After rainy conditions on Friday pushed qualifying to Saturday morning the fast 6 were determined to be: Alex Palou, Pato O’Ward, Felix Rosenqvist, Christian Lundgaard, David Malukas, and Louis Foster.
The Race:
On the opening lap, Felix Rosenqvist who started in 3rd place locked up, spun, and made contact with O’Ward, Scott Dixon, and Caio Collet. Despite the contact all the drivers continued in the race but the incident caused a full-course yellow. Palou managed to get away well, keeping the lead of the race.
By Lap 5 on the restart Kyle Kirkwood who qualified 9th was up to 3rd place and two laps later overtook Malukas, putting the top 3 in the race in the championship order. Alex Palou managed to pull out a 1.2 second gap and ran comfortably in clean air. Palou remained in a comfortable lead of the race until Lap 21 when Alexander Rossi’s car stopped on the front straight just after the brick line.
IndyCar officials chose to treat the stopped car as a local yellow; meaning that racing was permitted in other sections of the track but caution was thrown on the front straight. The local yellow was upgraded to a full course caution 3 laps later on Lap 24. At this point both Palou and Kirkwood dove into pit lane for tire change Palou taking new hard tires and Kirkwood taking new soft tires. Pitting under the full course caution which had the field bunched up resulted in a significant loss of track position for the pair. The progression from a local yellow to a full-course caution significantly altered the race narrative and completely reshuffled the strategic advantage.
On the restart of Lap 27, the Sonsio grand prix was now looking at a different set of cars in the mix for a potential win. Will Power in the lead and Lundgaard in fourth position, and was able to overtake Graham Rahal as the track went back to green. Lap 28 saw a third caution when Stingray Robb made contact with Pato O’Ward andFelix Rosenqvist who was already struggling through the race after his lock up on Lap 1 which resulted in opening lap chaos. This contact forced Palou onto the grass causing him to lose track position to Kirkwood, his closest championship rival.
With the order now mixed up, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard and Graham Rahal led the pack back to green on the Lap 33 restart. Arrow McLaren decided to pit Lundgaard on Lap 65 for his final pitstop attempting to use the undercut to gain advantage over race leader David Malukas. The early stop allowed Lundgaard to rejoin the race in clean air giving him the opportunity to get his tires up to temperature.
Team Penske responded 1 lap later by bringing Malukas into pit lane. Although Malukas managed to rejoin ahead of Lundgaard, he had significantly less push-to-pass remaining for the closing stages of the race.
Lundgaard’s brave drive around the outside of Turn 4 ultimately put him in the lead of the race, making this first win in Papaya, first win since the 2023 Honda Indy in Toronto, and his second win in the series. David Malukas got across the finish line in second place and Graham Rahal in third to complete the podium places.
