Usually when fans think of Formula 1 their mind goes straight to the on-track performance and racing of the drivers but there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that we don't see which makes what we do see so exciting. In this article we will explore how Formula 1 teams prepare for races.

One of the most important tools for Formula 1 teams are driving simulators as they replicate the details of the tracks, allowing drivers to practice driving the tracks exactly as they will see them on race day. These high-tech machines can also simulate conditions surrounding the track such as temperature and weather giving drivers the opportunity to practice different techniques and driving styles to perform as well as they can in every situation. Without these, drivers may not be as prepared as they are going into races and therefore performance would be affected.

Before a race, mechanics and engineers work to optimise car setup so that they can extract the most out of their cars on the track. This includes adjusting the angle of the wings, either allowing more downforce, pushing the car into the track, or having less downforce causing less grip in corners (this can potentially make the car harder to control). For a track with slow corners, it is best to make the angle of the wings higher, but for tracks with long, fast straights, it is best for a low angle.

Teams also analyze performance in free practice sessions to compare how on-track performance compares to simulation predictions. This allows teams to change their strategy to better suit the track and conditions. These last minute adjustments can make or break a race for a team, so it is very important that they do their best to perfect their car and strategy before the race to give the drivers the best chance at getting on the podium.

The teams must ensure that their drivers are well prepared for races, putting them through many simulations to allow them to memorise track layouts and adapt their driving style to better suit the track. The drivers study telemetry data and onboard footage from past races to ensure that they understand and learn from other drivers. This can help them to learn from mistakes that other drivers have made and can see what other teams have done well in the past and try their best to replicate what they did so that they can perform as well as they can. They must also maintain a high standard of physical fitness to allow their bodies to withstand the G-forces and harsh conditions of racing. However, not only is physical fitness important, but they must also train their minds to handle stressful situations.
