Johan Manzambi: The Wonderkid from Geneva
Johan Manzambi’s rise through European and international football has been insanely quick. At just 20 years old, he has already gone ahead to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the Swiss national team and is now nominated for the Ballon d’Or. But how did it come to this and where did he start?
About Manzambi
Johan Manzambi was born on the 14th of October 2005 in Geneva, Switzerland to Congolese and Angolan parents. Manzambi grew up as one of four siblings and according to his brother, football was always a huge part of his life when he was younger. At age four, he was always playing with a ball, even when he was supposed to do something else. Interestingly, Manzambi wanted to always be a goalkeeper and not a midfielder, admiring goalkeepers such as Yann Sommer or Manuel Neuer.
Servette
Servette FC was the football club that Johan Manzambi grew up and played with, joining the team when he was 5 years old in 2011. Growing up in Geneva, he went through all the different youth teams of Servette, already drawing attention to himself as a teenager. However, there was one particular game that made Manzambi’s decision of wanting to play football as a profession real. It was during the Swiss U18 cup. Playing for Servette’s youth team against FC Basel, Manzambi took a shot from more than 50 meters away from the opposing goal and with no surprise, he scored it perfectly. After that game, he had an interview with the Swiss news outlet Blick in which he said: “I’m already thinking of a professional career. One of my dreams is to play in the Champions League and eventually to represent Switzerland at a World Cup”
SC Freiburg
After spending his entire career, Johan Manzambi made a major decision at just 17. In January 2023, he left Servette FC and Switzerland altogether, joining SC Freiburg in Germany. The move also meant that he had to leave his family in Geneva and everything that he’d known since childhood. During the first six months, he lived in a boarding school and worked with a language teacher to learn German as people speak French in Geneva. At first it was difficult for him to adapt but then he started to shine through on the pitch.
In February of 2024, Manzambi made his debut for Freiburg’s reserve team in Germany’s third division. He scored twice in the ten appearances that he had during the remainder of the season in the third division. But he wouldn’t stay there for long because in September he was called up to Freiburg’s first team and made his Bundesliga debut against Heidenheim. He was only 18 at the time. His first goal in the Bundesliga followed in April 2025 against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Manzambi scored shortly before the final whistle and gave Freiburg a 2:1 victory. His performances improved and he was important to Freiburg, but he would also turn out to be important to a whole country.
Switzerland is Calling
Surprise surprise, his home country Switzerland is calling and they want him on their national team! He made his debut on the 7th of June 2025 against Mexico. Only four days later, he played against the United States and scored his first international goal. After that, his next appearance with the Swiss national team was at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In his first group phase game against Qatar, he was subbed in during the 66th minute of the game for Dan Ndyoe. The game ended with a 1:1, after Breel Embolo scored a goal for Switzerland and Miro Muheim scored an own goal.
In the second group phase game, they were up against Bosnia and Herzegovina and it was safe to say that Manzambi didn’t disappoint with his performance. Johan Manzambi was once again subbed in for Dan Ndoye in the 72nd minute and exactly two minutes later, Ruben Vargas delivered a beautiful assist before Manzambi went ahead and scored his first ever World Cup goal, setting the score to a 1:0 for Switzerland. Some would say he was done after that, but Manzambi wasn’t finished. After Ruben Vargas scored the 2:0 in the 84th minute, it was Johan Manzambi’s time to shine again. With Ruben Vargas once again giving him a beautiful assist Manzambi got to score the 3:0 for Switzerland in the 90th minute. The match concluded with a 4:1 after Ermin Mamic scored for Bosnia in the 93rd minute and Granit Xhaka for Switzerland in the 97th minute with a penalty. His performance against Bosnia seemed to change something in the starting eleven of the Swiss national team because Manzambi was given a place in it for the last group phase match against Canada. Switzerland won once again with a 2:1 after Ruben Vargas scored the first goal in the 46th minute with Manzambi following up with the second goal for Switzerland 9 minutes later. His last World Cup appearance would end up being in the round of 16 against Algeria, where he gave Breel Embolo the assist to the 1:0 for Switzerland before ultimately being subbed out for Noah Okafor in the 71st minute. And then comes the shock, Manzambi has injured himself during the assist and wasn’t able to play for Switzerland against Colombia or Argentina, which would also be the ultimate stop for Switzerland in the 2026 World Cup.
Aston Villa & Ballon d’Or
After his amazing effort in the 2026 World Cup and 2025/26 Bundesliga season, he became desired outside of the DACH region. On the 17th of July 2026, Johan Manzambi and SC Freiburg officially announced his transfer to Aston Villa, with the club reportedly paying him up to 70 million Euros. This makes Johan Manzambi a Swiss record transfer in terms of money. Before his appearance for the club, Johan Manzambi was nominated for the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. This award recognises the best young players in the world of football and Manzambi was nominated alongside other players such as Lamine Yamal or Pau Cubarsi. We will find out at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on the 26th of October if Johan Manzambi is the Young Talent of the year or not. Either way, being among one of the nominees is also a huge achievement with Manzambi only being 20 years old. His official Aston Villa debut followed after and was against Nottingham Forest on the 12th of September, in which Villa lost with the score being 1:2. A week later on the 19th of September, he made his official Premier League debut against Tottenham Spurs in which he immediately also scored his first Premier League goal in.
It is safe to say that Johan Manzambi has already set his mark in international football at just 20 years old and will only continue to grow playing at Aston Villa in the Premier League.
