The glorious win from the top English side Liverpool sets the team up nicely, leading up to the last match week of the Champions League stages. At the moment, Liverpool sit in 4th place, which is enough for them to advance in the round of 16. Marseille also have the chance to reach the round of 16 through the playoffs, even with one game left to go. The French side dominated the statistics, with 15 shots, 57% possession and 92% pass accuracy, it seemed like the game was in Marseille’s favour. The statistics only show one side of the story, as the results of the match were completely different.

In the first half, Liverpool was struggling to convert their attacks into a goal. Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz were seen to be struggling to capitalise against Marseille as the first half drew to a close. However, a clever free kick under the southern French team’s wall by Szoboszlai sent The Reds into the lead as they broke for half-time.

Both teams came into the second half hungry for goals, both determined to secure a win that would be vital in keeping them in contention for the round of 16. Liverpool were the successful side though. Eventually, Jeremie Frimpong found the back of the net through a right-side shot that took a back-hit deflection from the unfortunate keeper to take Liverpool to two goals. Marseille tried their hands at scoring a goal through Amine Gouri, Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who were met by the mighty force of Allison. In stoppage time, Gakpo made a connection with the back of the net, completely cementing the game’s results and another vital win for Slot’s side.

In discussing how the game went and their reasons for needing a win Wednesday night, Arne Slot, Liverpool manager, spoke to TNT Sports:

“It is a tricky place to go because of their fans and also the players and manager they have. They have a very good idea how to play and we had to be really good to beat them and we were. We took the ball off them a few times in the first half and should have done more. We generated less chances than on Saturday but scored three.

“In the last 13 games, we have been unbeaten, we have only been behind 54 minutes. We had chances to kill the game off and Hugo hit the bar and then they went down the other end and had a chance. In our season, usually that would go in.

“The reason we have been inconsistent is because we have struggled against low blocks.

“It's important we avoid those extra two games in the play-offs. We already have three players out for a long time. It's almost crucial that we don't have to play these games.”

The end result has all but secured Liverpool’s place in the round of 16, but makes trouble for the French side. They now sit one point above the elimination zone, which means Marseille now need to win their very last game, which is against Club Brugge in match week 8. Liverpool’s 4-2-2-2 formation subdued Marseille’s attacks perfectly, leaving them completely goalless against the English side. This is surprising, considering they have scored more goals than reigning Champions League winners PSG, with 42 goals. Will they be able to get through to the play-offs now? Is Liverpool’s position really secured? With many teams sitting on the same number of points, it might be a battle of goal difference to separate the top 8 from the rest of the teams.
