Lucas Coenen To Miss Swedish MXGP To Continue Hip Recovery

Lucas Coenen will miss this weekend’s MXGP of Sweden as he continues recovering from a hip injury he suffered at the British Grand Prix.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Lucas Coenen (19) will not compete in this weekend’s MXGP of Sweden, round 15 of 19 in the 2026 FIM World Championship, as the Belgian continues his recovery from a left hip injury. 

Coenen has been undergoing treatment for the inflammation of his sciatic nerve and pelvic area which was caused by the crash in the qualifying heat at the British Grand Prix. 

The injury had already forced the Belgian to sit out the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic and his home Grand Prix in Lommel, Belgium. 

After consulting with the team’s physiotherapist, Coenen and the team ultimately decided that traveling to Uddevalla this weekend for the Grand Prix of Sweden was premature. A return to racing at this point could cause a setback and more complications. 

“Obviously this is a big shame for me and for the team,” Lucas Coenen said. “It was already tough to miss my home GP and I hoped the extra days would let me get fit for Sweden but we ran out of time.” 

“I still have some pain and another crash could put us back to the beginning or create something worse,” he added. “I feel I am getting close to fitness but not yet.” 

The plan now is to keep up an intense course of treatment. His fitness to return to competition will be assessed on a day-to-day basis, rather than aim for a fixed return date. 

Team manager Davide De Carli supports the cautious approach. “This is hard for Lucas and his family but this is an injury that you cannot rush,” De Carli said. “You need to be as close as possible to 100% to do anything in MXGP and he is simply not ready for Sweden.” 

Coenen has won five Grands Prix this season and led the standings for much of it before his crash during qualifying at the British GP. Since the incident, the 19-year-old has not scored any points which cost him the lead in the championship. Coenen now sits third in the standings, while Jeffrey Herlings takes the championship lead.
