Out of all of the top 6 teams at the moment, Manchester United, under the guidance of Michael Carrick, have had the best run of form, with this match marking his 4th win after taking over the club from Ruben Amorim. Spurs, on the other hand, have had a spell of disadvantageous results, pushing them further and further towards the tail end of the league table. Manchester United have capitalised off of this, securing a simple and effective win against Tottenham, strengthening their 4th place in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils dominated the field throughout the game, and both the scoreline and statistics show just that. Tottenham did not have a single corner all game, their attacking force completely defeated by Manchester United’s solid defences, while United consistently tore through Spurs’ lines. With 64% possession, 23 shots and 9 on target, The Red Devils outplayed Tottenham consistently, with Spurs only having 5 shots and 1 on target all game. They did not make their situation any easier due to an early mistake knocking them down to 10 men.

At the beginning of the match, both teams appeared to be fighting for all the points. Tottenham came out giving Manchester United a fight, with 5 shots from each side in the first 20 minutes of the game. However, all seemed lost in the 29th minute, when Tottenham Captain, Romero, charged stud-first into Casemiro - a reckless tackle which saw him receive a straight red card. This put Tottenham at a huge disadvantage and a potential factor in their subsequent loss to The Red Devils. The game was completely turned on its head after a stunning display from the United players, where Bruno Fernandes fed the ball to returning star Kobbie Mainoo, who sent a clean no-look pass to Mbuemo sitting at the edge of the box. His low strike past the Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario took his season goal tally to 9, as he established himself well within the Manchester United squad.

Coming back from half time, Manchester United came out as if the break had never happened, and Tottenham were the same. With 10 men, Manchester United were hoping to extend their lead much earlier into the second half, however, the stars just never seemed to align for them to secure a goal. In the last 10 minutes, though, The Red Devils produced some magic from within their playing tactics. Diogo Dalot’s cross flew just shy of Benjamin Sesko’s head, but was picked up by Bruno Fernandes who let the ball bounce onto his shin rather than strike an attempt, which directed the ball into the far post, doubling their lead. This was not the end for either team, however, as the attacks kept coming, and both teams made countless attempts towards goal. Manchester United had one final chance when Benjamin Sesko fired a header straight at the ground into the keeper’s hands when a goal seemed certain. With that being the last kick of the game, Manchester United took home a simple, clean win against Spurs, handing them their 10th defeat in a row and left them dangling just 9 points off the relegation zone.

Following yet another defeat, Thomas Frank spoke to Sky Sports about his team’s performance:

“We started well, good away performance. Very even. Happy with that. The red card changed the momentum. Proud of the players for the 60 minutes, how they showed resilience and stayed in the game, kept fighting. We still created moments.

“It's very tough to go out and not get enough results, we haven't won enough. There is still a lot to hang a hat on. But form has to back that up, and we have to keep doing the right things. There is no other alternative than to keep going, which we will do.

“In the very tough times it's head down, stand up, work hard. There is no other way.”

When talking about the red card from the captain, Frank is adamant that he has no regrets about Romero’s captaincy, quickly coming to his defence:

“He’s apologised to his team-mates in the changing room. He's one of our most important players. He doesn't have any intention to get a red card.”

Bruno Fernandes spoke to TNT Sports about the game and how Carrick has changed the team:

“It's incredible. We have had moments where we were not great but the crowd was still like this. The energy is different because we win, everything looks brighter.

“Carrick came in with the right ideas, giving the players the responsibility and freedom on the pitch.

“Everyone understands the pressure of playing for this club, everyone knows the expectations around it. He knows what it means for this club to win. It adds something special to the team."

Michael Carrick was all smiles following his positive stint at the club so far, also talking to Sky Sports post-match:

“I'm encouraging confidence, not flicks and tricks, but playing with purpose.

“The connection with everyone has been as good as anything. The feeling, the emotion and connection with players, staff and fans - it feels good. We've had to win games in different ways. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to see the stadium this way, to look forward to the excitement.

“I'm pleased with the buy-in. We're in a good emotional place and that helps you. The four games we've had look different, we've not cracked it. I'm aware of that.”

Manchester United are secure in 4th spot at this stage, so does that mean The Red Devils can start to look forward to not just European football, but Champions League football again next year? Looking at Tottenham, is there a way to save their season?
