Mexico City E-Prix Recap

As the lights went out and our grid accelerated to turn one, Taylor Barnard pressured Buemi into a defensive start. His full focus on watching and reacting to the young Briton in his mirrors meant he misjudged the first corner going into the run off, tumbling from 1st to 17th in a matter of seconds. On lap 4, our season 10 champion, Pascal Wehrlein, made it clear he was on a different strategy to the rest of the grid by taking his first attack mode. The German driver went from 5th to first in two laps! The extra 50kW of power and all-wheel drive is truly hard to defend from. Mueller caught up to his teammate after passing Motara for second, and Porsche decided to switch their cars on lap 8 for Wehrlein to save more energy.

On lap 10, Da Costa made a bold move at turn one, dive-bombing his competitors, but this ultimately resulted in him falling down to 5th. Barnard, who started second, had fallen back, being overtaken by those using attack mode but bounced back to pass Ticktum and Wehrlein on lap 14. Two laps later we had a midfield battle between Dennis, Ticktum, Da Costa, Vergne and Rowland, resulting in a new order in the pack.

Just over halfway through the E-Prix, Nyck De Vries was struck with bad luck, stopping in the runoff at turn one causing the yellow flag to make an appearance. At the same time, Barnard and Dennis made contact briefly; Rowland was stripped of an attack mode, having taken it a lap earlier, due to the incident, just after an incident with Da Costa and Guenther where he got pushed onto the grass momentarily. In the chaos of the E-Prix, Buemi had fought back to get up to 6th. With the race being neutralised by a full course yellow, the safety car was then brought out on lap 20 as the Mahindra was still stuck in the run off. Another comeback was from Pepe Martí. The Spanish rookie had to serve penalties carried over from the Brazil E-Prix and started 19th but caught up to the pack and had 6% of energy over the present race leader - Mueller. Unfortunately for Buemi, after having a great recovery drive, he had to pit and change tyres due to a puncture, falling to P19.

By lap 22, we went green again with the safety car coming back in. Da Costa got the jump on Max Guenther momentarily before Guenther took attack mode and repassed him. Four laps later, we had a defining moment where Guenther, Da Costa and Vergne collided and Ticktum got caught up in the debris, resulting in a short yellow flag. Our race leader, Mueller, would then go wide on lap 28, opening the door very nicely for Evans to take to the front of the pack. We were then notified of 2 added laps due to the safety car period in the middle of the session, and Martí had climbed his way to 8th in the restart. Our final lap was one of raw racing action with 5 cars jostling for a race win, in the end Nick Cassidy took the chequered flag with Motara and Rowland joining him on the podium and Barnard and Dennis marginally missing out on the silverware.
