In the usual style of the South Korean football team, they dominated the pitch from the starting whistle, with Shin Sang-Woo making 7 changes to the starting line-up from the 3-0 victory against Iran just three days prior.
Just 12 minutes in, Korean striker Jeon Yu-Geong scored the first goal of the game and put Korea ahead at 1-0. The Philippines were discouraged but didn’t give up hope, continuing to play to their strengths.
Not even three minutes later, Korea scored their second goal with a beautiful finish from Park Soo-Jeong.
The Philippines struggled with offensive opportunities, with their limited attempts being easily stopped by Kim Min-Jung.
Half-time came around, giving each team an opportunity to regroup and revise their playing styles and make improvements before the second half.
Upon their return to the pitch, the Philippines had a double substitution with Jourdyn Curran and Mallie Ramirez coming on for Isabella Pasion and Chandler McDavid, in an attempt to feed new energy to the losing side.
53 minutes in, the first yellow card of the game was presented to Choo Hyo-Joo for an altercation on the pitch.
After a long fought battle, the third goal of the game was scored at the 56-minute mark by the Korean Republic’s Eun Ju-Moon, extending the lead to 3-0.
Further substitutions occurred from the 60th to the 88th minute for both teams, to send fresh legs on the field and refresh the energy.
Despite the new additions, no further goals were scored for either team, strong attempts from Korea were blocked and deflected and the Korean defence were able to keep the Philippines attackers away from their half of the pitch.
