The Vancouver Canucks’ captain Quinn Hughes has been signed to the Minnesota Wild after a shock trade deal, marking the end of the Canucks’ era as a team with one of their best players in history.

The Vancouver Canucks have traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and the 2026 first-round pick.
After much speculation surrounding Hughes’ future at Vancouver and the possibility of him going to New Jersey to play with his younger brothers, this deal has sent shockwaves through the NHL.
Hughes has been the top name on the trade market and has faced trade rumours with countless teams in the NHL, however, a deal with the Minnesota Wild is one that many people did not see coming.
Minnesota’s Zeev Buium was the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and made his debut in the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring.
Rossi has been a strong number one centre until a recent injury which had him sidelined for several weeks, however the depth provided by rookie Danila Yurov has proved further potential within the team.
The Wild are sitting at third in the Central Division currently, and after this move, could climb the standings rapidly.
After an incredible set of games throughout November, including beating the Colorado Avalanche and the Dallas Stars, they might be one of the best teams in the league right now.
This new deal will change the play styles of both the Canucks, who used Hughes as an integral player in their defence and based many of their strategies around him, as well as the Wild, who now have the opportunity to capitalise on the addition of the 2024 James Norris Trophy winner and one of the most talented players in the league currently.
The impacts this trade will have on the NHL will be seen in upcoming games, all the way to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It will be interesting to see how the Wild capitalise on the long list of strengths that Quinn Hughes has to offer.
