The Cultural Importance of Ice Hockey in Canada

Ice hockey is seen as Canada's official winter sport and is popular around the world. However, to Canadians, it’s more than a game, it a culture.

The History

Ice hockey in Canada all began in the 19th century, with games being played on frozen lakes during long, cold winters. In 1875, the first recorded game took place in Montreal, making it a beginning of the first organised competition. The founding of the NHL (National Hockey League) in 1917 professionalised the sport, helping it grow into a major part of Canadian tradition.

NHL impact on Canada's cities

The NHL has a massive impact on cities across Canada. On game days, teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens bring in loads of visitors and tourists which helps support local small businesses. The stadiums also become important 

landmarks and major tourist destinations. For many locals, supporting their NHL is a memorable part of growing up.

Rise of diversity 

In recent years, Canadian ice hockey has focused on making the game inclusive and accessible for anyone who wants to watch or play. Indigenous people have made multiple positive changes to the sport, which is now being recognised. The NHL also hosts Pride games to show support to the LGBTQ+ community and to cancel out ‘typical stereotypes’ in the game. This shows that ice hockey is adapting to a more diverse and accepting sport, and that anyone can play or enjoy hockey
