The Star-Studded 76ers: Philly-yay or Philly-meh?

The Philadelphia 76ers and their new starting lineup are all everyone seems to be talking about during this exceptionally wild NBA offseason. As they chase the Larry O’Brien trophy next season, its all eyes on them; if they’re just chock-full of talent and big names, or a true championship winning fit.

It’s always sunny in Philadelphia, but the lights just got a whole lot brighter for the 76ers. With the acquisition of 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and LeBron James in free agency, ‘the process’ has decidedly come to an end. The Philadelphia 76ers now boast an elite starting 5 with a potential lineup of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James and Joel Embiid, the most stacked in the league talent-wise. 

Even with the 2026-27 season far away, there have already been conversations about this roster emerging as the top seed in the East and a formidable foe for the championship-defending Knicks. Questioning the skills of this team would be foolhardy. It begs to be asked, however - is Philly a true contender, or are they electrifying merely on paper and not in play?

The 76ers’ 2026 offseason has been one for the books; the moves reflecting a palpable change in the organisation’s mindset. LeBron James and Jaylen Brown aside, prominent frontcourt additions include centre Ariel Hukporti from New York, and 3-and-D man Dean Wade from Cleveland, who was a key part of the Cavs’ rotation. Joining Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe in the backcourt are veteran 2-guard Anfernee Simons from the Bulls and rookie point guard Labaron Philon Jr., the 22nd pick in the 2026 Draft. Paving the way for these signings were the waiver of Dalen Terry and the departures of Andre Drummond, Paul George, Kelly Oubre Jr., Quentin Grimes and Johni Broome.

The NBA Offseason Power Rankings put Philadelphia no. 2 overall in the Eastern Conference just below the New York Knicks, courtesy of their proposed superstar starting lineup. 

In the 2025-26 regular season, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey were both within the league top 5 in points per game, averaging 28.7 and 28.3 PPG respectively. Maxey is also Philly’s franchise leader in career 3 pointers, with 916 made threes. Both Embiid and Lebron averaged 20+ PPG, the latter also being 7th overall in the league in assists. VJ Edgecombe also put up impressive numbers, averaging 16.0 points per game last season and finished 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting. It is also notable that LeBron James and Tyrese Maxey are threats in transition, being first and second respectively in the league in fast break points scored. 

Despite the big names and promising numbers, this roster too is not completely infallible. A glaring observation is the fact that four of five guys in this starting lineup are high usage players. Of all playoff players last season, both Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid were tied with the highest usage rate for at least 100 playoff minutes played, at 32.5%. 

While Tyrese Maxey is dominant as a fast and dynamic shot creator, his playmaking and efficiency in iso and pull-up shots lacks consistency. He is prone to turning the ball over when faced by stronger defensive teams. It will be interesting to see how Nick Nurse utilises a powerful offensive mind like LeBron’s to complement Maxey’s strengths as a scorer, and builds a real offense out of these guys and just one basketball. 

Defensive disadvantages also abound, with Joel Embiid unable to aggressively protect the rim, and a lack of off-ball defense. Jaylen Brown is extremely reliable as an on-ball and switch defender, and also in iso match-ups at the perimeter. Being a ball-watcher, however, he is late on rotations and defensive reads. 

Having played in only 38 games last season, questions on Embiid’s consistency due to health and injury concerns are unfortunately still very valid. The absence of Embiid and hence, a commanding size and presence in the interior put them in a precarious position against elite offensive teams like the Spurs or the Thunder in the West, and their conference rivals in New York.  

With blockbuster trade deals now having the Eastern Conference looking stronger than it has in decades, its safe to say everyone’s holding their breath about where the Philadelphia 76ers stand in the midst of a possible conference resurgence. Will this be another chance at a ring for 42 year old LeBron James before he bids the NBA farewell? An opportunity for Joel Embiid to prove himself as a true cornerstone of ‘the process’? 

Brian Windhorst did liken the 76ers to “a room full of gorgeous couches”. Let’s hope they don’t just sit there looking pretty.
