June marks pride month, a month in which we protest against homophobia, but most importantly, celebrate our differences, also in sports. This is why we The Rookie Reporters are starting the sunshine project. A project designed to empower queer athletes, whether it is in the NBA, NFL or your local football club.

The Goal
The goal of this project is to empower queer athletes and promote inclusivity. There are too many queer athletes whose talent and work ethic are minimised because of their sexuality. This project aims to highlight the achievements of these individuals to remind people of their resilience and their incredible talent. The Rookie Reporters aim to make sports a safe space for every athlete, employee and fan.
The Means
Our platform is built on inclusivity and giving sports a fresh perspective. This project uses that platform to make sure that every athlete is seen, especially during pride month. During the month of June, some of our members will take the extra time to highlight queer athletes. Writing articles and making content. Whether that be about somebody's career or about an organisation that makes queer sports possible, we aim to put those people in the sunlight.
Sport is for everyone, from the schoolyard football match that creates friend groups to the locker room, everyone should feel included. LGBTQ+ representation doesn’t just mean rainbow flags, it means every athlete is seen and heard, even if they are queer, because everyone deserves sunshine.
