The firsts are always special, but imagine having a dream World Cup debut on the verge of making history. Looking back at the magical, but also controversial World Cup 2002, Senegal was one of those teams in the tournament that did the unthinkable. This article covers the journey of the Lions of Teranga back in 2002.

Turning back the pages of the history books, Senegal’s football story begins with the founding of the Senegalese Football Federation in 1960, the same year they gained their independence from France. Two years later, they joined FIFA and the next year, they became a member of the Confederation of African Football(CAF) as well. However, they had to wait 40 years to make their World Cup debut. Between 2000-2001 in the World Cup Qualifiers, Senegal managed to qualify for their first World Cup under the management of the French coach Bruno Metsu. They beat Benin 2-1 on aggregate in the first round and topped their Group C in the second round, which also included teams like Morocco, Egypt and Algeria. They booked their tickets to Japan and South Korea with the help of a big goal difference, despite finishing on the same points as Morocco.

In the group stage, the debutants were drawn into Group A with some very experienced teams. Former multiple-time winners Denmark, Uruguay and the reigning European and World Champions of the time, France were the ones to welcome Senegal into the biggest stage of international football. In the opening game, Metsu’s men went up against the France of Desailly, Vieira and Henry. The reigning champions were heavily considered favourites, but the goal came by Bouba Diop to put Senegal 1-0 up in the 30th minute, when he surprisingly found the deflected ball right at his feet. For the rest of the game, despite being in control most of the time, France couldn’t create much threat on the opposite goal and the few they created got denied either by the goalposts or the Senegal defenders.  So, the Lions of Teranga entered the World Cup stage with a huge win. Next up was Denmark, who also won their opening game against Uruguay. This time the game started tricky for Senegal, as Salif Diao brought down Tomasson in the box and he converted the penalty to the opening goal. They tried to give a quick response, but were denied by the Danish goalkeeper Sørensen. In fact, Denmark found another goal, but this time it was disallowed, so ended the first half 1-0 for Denmark. In the second half Senegal started to pressurise Denmark more and the same Diao found the equaliser on the 52nd minute. Despite Senegal’s intense push for a second goal, they couldn’t put the ball into the net and surprisingly, Diao wasn’t done yet either. The midfielder got sent off in the closing stages of the match due to a hard sliding tackle against his opponent and so concluded the game with a draw. Coming to the last matchday of the group stage Denmark and Senegal were on 4 points, while France and Uruguay were on 1, a draw would be enough for Senegal to reach the knockout stages and keep the dream run alive. Against Uruguay, Lions of Teranga opened the scoreline on the 20th minute with Fadiga’s penalty and then, Bouba Diop added a brace to finish the first half 3-0 in front. But, Uruguay wasn’t going to give up so easily, as they found a goal back with the first kicks of the second half. Then, Forlan scored Uruguay’s second with a beautiful volley in the 69th minute and in the closing stages, Recoba converted a penalty to their equaliser. They even had a chance to score a fourth one, but Senegal's defence didn’t let them. So, with this result and Denmark’s victory against France, Senegal finished Group A in the second place to qualify to the Knockout Stages.

In the Round of 16, Senegal was going to face Sweden of Henrik Larsson and a young Ibrahimovic, who unexpectedly topped Group F against England, Argentina and Nigeria. With the first whistle, Sweden had already started to threaten Senegal’s goal. Thanks to a misjudged attempt from the goalkeeper Sylva to get the ball, they found an early goal with Larsson from a corner in the 10th minute. Metsu’s men found a chance to equalise in the 25th minute, but their goal got ruled out due to offside. Senegal’s response came towards the end of the first half, when Henri Camara’s shot from outside the box ended up in the left corner of Sweden’s net. Although Sweden kept controlling the game and didn’t give many chances to Senegal, they couldn’t get the ball past Sylva and no winner emerged in 90 minutes. In the extra time, much like France’s Trezeguet’s first half attempt in the opening game, Sweden found an opportunity inside the Senegal box, but his shot ended up hitting the post. This close miss cost Sweden in the next minutes, when Henri Camara once again turned one of Senegal’s few chances into a golden goal to send his team into the quarter-finals. The Lions of Teranga have been given an opportunity to rewrite African football history.

The first time an African team reached the quarter-finals was the 1990 World Cup. Cameroon was the country to achieve this feat. 12 years after that, Senegal became the second team to repeat this success and were eager to shock the world by becoming the first to reach the World Cup semi-finals. However, their opponents were another country, who didn’t appear in the World Cup for almost half a decade and were making a historic run of their own: Türkiye. In the game of both teams making their history, both teams missed opportunities to take the lead. A disallowed goal due to offside for Senegal, a goal line clearance and some missed opportunities for Türkiye concluded in a goalless draw in 90 minutes, which added another extra time in Senegal’s journey. But, that extra time was very short-lived, when Ilhan Mansiz converted Umit Davala’s cross into the last golden goal in World Cup history, only four minutes into the extra time. This goal meant the end of the dream run of Metsu’s men and those semi-final dreams were going to be achieved after two decades, but not by the Lions of Teranga.

This amazing World Cup journey of Senegal became an inspiration to build their future. The 2002 squad were considered their golden age and the nation used them to build a new one. Since the captain of the 2002 squad and former caretaker manager Aliou Cissé took charge in 2015, Senegal has become a growing force in African football for the last decade. Finding players like Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly and Idrissa Gueye helped them build a strong squad for the future. The Lions of Teranga made their return to the World Cup stage in 2018 and now they will be making their third consecutive appearance in 2026. Under Cissé’s management, Senegal also won their first African Cup of Nations(AFCON) in 2021 against Egypt. After Aliou Cissé left the post in 2024, another player of that squad, Papé Thiaw became the manager of the national team. Thiaw’s Senegal managed to qualify for the World Cup by going unbeaten in the qualifiers and most recently repeated Cissé’s successful AFCON campaign, winning the controversial final against Morocco.

In conclusion, Senegal turned its first World Cup appearance into a historic journey in 2002. That affected the nation’s football presence in the long-term to become one of the strongest teams of the continent. In Group I of the 2026 World Cup, Senegal will be up against the Scandinavian side Norway, France once again and one of the teams coming from FIFA Play-Off 2(Bolivia/Iraq/Suriname). We’ll see what the Lions of Teranga will bring to the World Cup stage this summer.
