Villans Taste European Glory Once Again: SC Freiburg vs Aston Villa UEL Final Recap

Where two continents meet, awaits a trophy to lift. In the UEFA Europa League 25/26 Season Final, SC Freiburg and Aston Villa face each other in Istanbul.
7 years after the UEFA Super Cup Final between Liverpool and Chelsea, Besiktas Park gets to host the UEFA Europa League final this time, with its mesmerising Bosphorus view. Istanbul appears to be a hunting ground for the English teams, as no English team has ever lost a final that is held in this city.
Aston Villa reached their first final appearance since their last successful campaign in 1982 European Cup and they’re willing to end the 44-year European glory drought. The Villans have a final-specialist on their side, who has reached his 6th UEL final, Unai Emery. The Spanish manager is on the hunt for his 5th Europa League trophy. Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rodgers and John McGinn will be Emery’s best hopes for goals, alongside the team’s other assets. Meanwhile, the German side SC Freiburg steps into an unknown territory, as die Breisgauer-Brasilianer gets to play the first-ever European final in the club's 121-year history. The German club is looking forward to celebrating their upcoming 122th birthday on 30th of May with a historic win in Istanbul. While the experienced defender Matthias Ginter and Freiburg’s own Noah Atubolu will play crucial roles to withstand the Villans’ attackers; Grifo, Manzambi and Matanovic will be Julian Schuster’s eyes for goals as usual.
Coming into this crucial game, in addition to the ineligible Ross Barkley and injured Boubacar Kamara, Aston Villa also has injury doubts over midfielder Amadou Onana and centre-back Victor Lindelöf. Either Bogarde or Douglas Luiz is expected to replace the Belgian midfielder’s possible absence. On the other hand, Freiburg is missing their attacking midfielder Yuito Suzuki due to fractured collarbone and their defensive midfielder Patrick Osterhage is an injury doubt. The German side is filling the Japanese attacking midfielder’s role with their rising youngster Johan Manzambi recently.

First Half
The game begins rapidly with shots from Morgan Rogers, who is denied by Noah Atubolu. Freiburg get their first chance in a set piece, as the ball drops in front of Nicholas Höfler inside the Villa box, but the leaving midfielder barely misses the target. Johan Manzambi also tries from long range, like he did against Braga and Bayern Munich, but Emiliano Martínez doesn’t struggle much to save the ineffective attempt. The dreadlock gets blown to pieces, when Rogers crosses the ball to an unmarked Youri Tielemans, who volleys the ball first-time into the net. Aston Villa get the lead in the 41st minute and extend it right before the first-half whistle. Emi Buendía receives the pass from captain McGinn and curls the ball beautifully to the top left corner to conclude the first half with a 2-0 lead for the Villans
Second Half
In the second half, Aston Villa keeps putting the Breisgauers under pressure. First, Buendía attempts to lob the keeper, but the ball lands into Atubolu’s hands. And then, a surprisingly silent Ollie Watkins tries to convert another set piece into a goal with an unsuccessful tap. However, the Villans manage to find a third goal in the 58th minute with Morgan Rogers, who taps Buendía’s low cross into the net, before Atubolu can reach it. Freiburg find a few openings after the third goal, but they are caught offside every time. Aston Villa get close to a fourth goal as well, but subbed-in Onana headers into the post and Buendía wastes a close-range opportunity. Both teams can’t find any more goals in the remaining minutes and the final whistle blows for a 3-0 victory for Aston Villa.
With this result, Aston Villa once again became European champions 44 years after their last successful campaign. Unai Emery wins the Europa League for the fifth time and makes it with 3 different teams. Aston Villa initially attempted to find openings in transition plays, but found the gold in set pieces, which was something their opponents were expected to be good at. Both first half goals came as extensions of their corner organisations. Buendía received the final Man of the Match award with his performance, a goal and an assist to his name in Villans’ glory. Morgan Rogers’ energy can’t be overlooked as well, also giving a goal and assist contribution. The Villans have already guaranteed Champions League football by finishing the Premier League in top 5, so this win will only promote them to UCL Pot 1 for the next season as UEL winners. However, Bournemouth now cross the fingers for Aston Villa’s potential 5th place finish, in order to gain Champions League football through league position. England remain unbeaten in Istanbul finals and the Germans are defeated once again after the 2009 UEFA Cup Final. Freiburg found occasional chances with Manzambi and Höfler, but couldn’t use them and keep up with the relentless Villans. Höfler’s farewell tour ends bittersweet with the defeat of the Breisgau-Brazilians. Despite the overwhelming defeat, the entire campaign was a valiant effort for the German club and their former captain, now coach Julian Schuster.
In summary, Aston Villa emerged victorious after a thrilling game against SC Freiburg and lifted the Europa League trophy at Besiktas Park. Now, the Villains will wait for the clash between PSG and Arsenal in the Champions League Final, which determines their opponent in the UEFA Super Cup next season.
