Who is Alex Powell, the "Jamaican Sensation”?
Meet the 19 year old Jamaican-American who scored his first F3 podium in his second race weekend.
After the announcement that Louis Sharp would not continue with the Prema F3 team prior to this years’ Monza Grand Prix, it was confirmed who would be replacing him for the remainder of the season but who is this new driver on the F3 grid?
Alex Powell is a Jamaican-American, Miami born, driver who first began his racing career back in 2015 at the age of 8. He competed in several karting championships in the USA and in the Caribbean prior to moving to Italy at only age 11. He continued in karting and in 2022, he placed 2nd in the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship in the UK (Original Kart) category and went on to place third in the championship a year later.
Powell’s single-seater career began in 2023 with Prema at the Mugello circuit for the sixth round of the Italian F4 Championship. That year, he also participated in the Trophy round of Formula 4 UAE and ended up competing for the Mumbai Falcons in the 2024 F4 UAE season during pre-season as well. That year, he achieved his first win in single-seaters and achieved three podiums as well, helping him finish sixth in the championship.
His Italian F4 career continued with Prema in 2024 for his first full season in a single-seater. The start of the season brought him three second place finishes at the races in Misano, and he then achieved his first Italian F4 pole in Vallelunga. His consistent finishes, however, no wins that season, allowed him to finish fifth in the championship. Powell competed in yet another racing series, Euro 4, in 2024 with Prema and achieved a race win in Monza.
Prior to the 2025 Italian F4 season, Powell competed with R-ace GP in the 2025 F4 UAE Championship, which was now named the F4 Middle East Championship. On his opening round, he achieved pole position and continued with success by achieving a pair of podiums in the next round. His first victories of the season were in Dubai, including a 0.057s gap between him and Kean Nakamura-Berta, the driver in second position, during the third race. Consistent driving led Alex into a title fight with his teammate and an overall 2nd place finish in the standings that season.
As for his main drive, Powell moved from Prema over to R-ace GP for his Italian F4 season. His campaign with the team was difficult despite achieving two wins from pole, as he finished ninth in the standings in comparison to his third position the year before. He went on to race in the E4 Championship with R-ace GP, and raced in the first round of the 2025 F4 Spanish Championship with Saintéloc Racing. In September 2025, he was announced as a wildcard driver for Prema Racing during the Formula Regional European Championship at the Red Bull Ring.
This year, Alex moved his main campaign to compete in Eurocup-3 back with Campos Racing. During the pre-season, he competed in the Formula Regional Middle East Trophy with Pinnacle Motorsport. Then, most recently, Alex re-joined Prema and raced in the last two rounds of the F3 championship along with a test in Madrid. It’s unconfirmed if Alex will be racing with the team for the upcoming 2027 season, but he finished twice in the points during the five races that he competed in, proving that he has the experience and drive to compete again next year.
