What are the World Junior Figure Skating Championships?
The World Junior Figure Skating Championships are an ISU global event for the best young skaters from around the world in the Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Pairs, and Ice Dance. The very first Junior World Championship event was held in France back in 1976 in Megeve, where the competition gave rising stars the chance to showcase their talent.
Who can Compete in the Competition?
Single Skaters - between 13 and 19 year olds (who were born before July 1st)
Ice Dance and Pairs Women - Between 13 and 21 year olds
Pairs Men - Between 13 and 23 year olds
The Skaters must represent an ISU Nation and must be selected by their national team coach.
What is is each category known for?
Men's Singles - The Men’s Singles often features high stakes with large jumps such as a quad axel being attempted during performances.
Women’s Singles - The Woman’s Singles event is known for many young stars making their debut and showing what they can do when out on the ice.
Pairs - Pairs are known for showcasing and attempting difficult lifts and throws, meaning competitors will be trying to impress the judges.
Ice Dance - This competition will be judged on how precise their movements on the ice are.
What is the history of the Competition?
The very 1st competition started in Megeve, France, back in 1976 featured winners Mark Cocrell and Suzie Brasher who had both represented Team USA. Then back in the 1980s, a range of skaters from many different countries who had senior level experience were removed from the competition. In 2021, the only conciliation was that year, and that was due to the COVID 19 Pandemic.

Why the World Junior Championships Matter?
The World Junior Championships matter because as this gives young athletes such as Yuzuru Hanyu and Alina Zagitova the chance to make their debut in this competition. This competition also means that the young skaters try to push themselves by doing many quads and add high risked elements into their performances. But for many of those young athletes from all over the world, this competition will give them the chance to shine as this will be their 1st major competition on Ice.
