Chaos broke out during the closing minutes of the game, as Chelsea claimed victory over West Ham in an intense 3-2 win for The Blues. Despite a poor performance in the first half which left them looking for a comeback, Chelsea managed to pull it back, with the winning goal being scored in injury time. West Ham did not make it easy for Chelsea, though, and the match ended in shambles with unprofessional fights breaking out right, left and centre. What went wrong for West Ham and what was it that changed for Chelsea?

Despite their little possession throughout the entire match, the scoreline suggests that West Ham had no problem with dealing with Chelsea for a large part of the game. The first half reflects Chelsea’s struggle. Despite their countless attempts within the opening minutes of the match, they were the first to concede, with Jarred Bowen sending The Hammers ahead early on. Things didn’t stay like this for Chelsea though, and they saw themselves concede again to West Ham, where Crysencio Summerville strengthened their advantage over The Blues. In the first half of the match, Chelsea had many chances to score but just didn’t seem to convert them into goals.

It was The Blues’ triple substitution by Liam Rosenoir at half time that made the real difference to Chelsea’s game and led them to the win. The introduction of Joao Pedro and Marc Cucurella saw a massive difference in the attacking force of the team, and within the first 10 minutes of the second half, Chelsea were on a comeback. Fofana’s brilliant skills slid him past West Ham’s defensive line, curling it into the box for a smooth header by Joao Pedro to bring Stanford Bridge back to life. An equaliser then came in the second substitution from Chelsea, Cucurella diving to head the rebound ball from a huge attempt by Gusto, straight into an empty net. With the scoreline all square going into the final 20 minutes, both The Blues and The Hammers had an equal opportunity to take the 3 points.

Despite their best efforts, The Hammers weren’t able to hold off the attacking force of Chelsea. Joao Pedro had his second goal involvement this match, which contributed to his team’s win when his cutback from close range left Enzo Fernandez to smash home a glorious goal, securing Chelsea’s victory. Whilst the match was over, this was just the beginning of some more bizarre action from both team’s players.

The altercation began when West Ham winger Adama Traoré and Marc Cucurella were battling with the ball towards the corner flag, and Cucurella eventually went down scrambling for the ball. When he went to get up, Traoré took out his frustrations on him, throwing Cucurella to the ground to then clash with João Pedro, who came in to defend his teammate. Chaos ensued afterwards, with players from both teams coming in to intervene, and Jean-Clair Tobidbo was shown a straight red for putting his hands around the throat of Joao Pedro. Despite the amount of people involved, only three players received cards for their actions in the brawl, with Traore and Pedro being given yellows by Taylor. Konstantinos Mavropanos also appeared to slap Cole Palmer amid the chaos and received no card for that. The action fizzled out shortly after, and Chelsea grounded themselves to finish the game smoothly, taking home the much needed 3 points.

When looking at the comeback at full-time from his team, Cucurella spoke to Sky Sports:

“At half-time we speak, in the end it's about our mentality and desire we showed in the second half, we are very happy. [Liam Rosenior] said it's about us, if we go to press, want the ball, play with confidence, we will get the chances to win.

“We have very good players, a very good team, since the start of the second half we showed a lot of energy and desire. If we play with this energy we are able to win a lot of games.”

Joao Pedro, who contributed the most to the goals and the subsequent win from his introduction at half time, also spoke to Sky Sports about the game:

“Sometimes this can happen, but we have a strong squad. We showed we are capable to do it, now we must look forward and continue.

“We knew our power. It's another special day. This team is very young but everyone trusts each other, this is our power. We can improve a lot, but this game is important to show the fans how strong we are.”

With this result, the team jumped to 4th, with their win streak remaining intact under their new manager. Things are looking up for Chelsea, looking onto their next games, victories appear in sight and straight-forward.
