Ahead of the season finale in London, Envision Racing has announced that both drivers, Sébastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson, will be departing the team after the final race. As the London E-Prix marks the end of the Gen 3 era, the team at Envision Racing has shifted in a different direction.

While one driver was more likely to leave the team, the surprise is Joel Eriksson's departure from the team. With this rookie season having seen him collect points and his first podium in Shanghai, Joel has been competitive, but with the team making changes, the Swedish driver is currently without a drive for Gen 4.

Sébastien Buemi will also leave the series after racking up 14 wins, 36 podiums, 17 pole positions and the 2015-16 drivers’ title. He will instead take an advisory and development role with the team. The clashes with the WEC rounds amplified rumours that this would happen, although only one is now scheduled.

About the announcement, team principal Sylvain Filippi had this to say about the changes:

“This has been a difficult decision, particularly given the contribution both Seb and Joel have made to our team.”

“As we look ahead to Gen4 and an increasingly demanding Formula E calendar, we are entering an important period of development for the team. Seb’s experience will remain valuable to us, and we are pleased that he will continue to support Envision Racing in an advisory and development capacity.”

“We are grateful to both drivers for everything they have given to Envision Racing and look forward to ending the Gen3 era on a high in London.”

While we do not officially know who is replacing the two drivers, rumours have been circulating about Maximilian Günther and the squad, as well as reserve driver Zak O’Sullivan, who may join the team. With the new season starting in December, many of the seats are still open, so the Envision seats are wide open for now.
