With their first Premier League appearance since 2017 quickly approaching, Sunderland’s goal is to put their best foot forward when it comes to ensuring Premier League survival. Their transfer window moves reinforce this desire, with the signing of Granit Xhaka set to confirm Sunderland’s desire to fight for survival.

Despite securing promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic playoff final victory over Sheffield United, many believe Sunderland is one of the favourites to get relegated back to the Championship.
The club’s transfer window, which has already seen the arrival of players like Enzo Le Fee, clearly proves that they’re not planning to sit around and go back and forth between the top two divisions of English football.
Now, after spending seven seasons with Arsenal, Granit Xhaka is set to make his Premier League return with Sunderland after signing a three-year £17 million contract to join The Black Cats.
He’ll be returning to England after a stint with Bayer Leverkusen that saw him make 99 total appearances for the club while scoring six goals. Trophy-wise, he helped Leverkusen in winning their first Bundesliga title, a DFB-Pokal title, and a DFB-Supercup during his two-year stint with Die Werkself.
All that is left to complete the transfer is a medical, which sources say Xhaka will be heading to the UK to do so, and sign the contract.
The signing not only gets Sunderland some valuable Premier League experience, something that will undoubtedly be of value to them during their first season back in the top flight, but it also puts them in a position to potentially build towards a long-term stay in the Premier League.
With clubs like Nottingham Forest finding success after investing in the squad during the transfer window, Sunderland’s move for Granit Xhaka should not be taken as too much of a surprise.
Whether it can guarantee safety for Sunderland is a question that will have to be answered throughout the 2025-26 Premier League season.
