After a stunning display, Brentford came out victorious after a stoppage-time goal from the Bees and a disallowed goal from Burnley, much to the disappointment of the Burnley players.

Brentford and Burnley put on an incredible display on Saturday after the game saw 7 goals in total. During the game, both teams were quite evenly matched statistically. The game saw 12 shots from Brentford and 9 from Burnley, with 5 and 4 being on target. The possession was quite balanced, too, with 41% for Burnley and 59% for Brentford. Despite this, both teams worked tirelessly, and the cards fell in Brentford’s favour, where the points could have been shared but ended up all going to The Bees.
The first goal came very soon from the visitors in the 9th minute, as Dango Ouattara curled the ball into the box from a corner, meeting Mikkel Damsgaard who headed it into the bottom left corner of the net. The momentum led in Brentford’s favour, as they searched for a second goal to further secure their lead, but Burnley were not giving up. Jaidon Antony made some good attempts at goal in the 17th minute and the 21st minute, but salvation came for Brentford instead at the hands of Igor Thiago with a left-footed smash into the bottom right corner after an assist from Mikkel Damsgaard. Misery for Burnley was not yet over, however, as Kevin Schade slipped a third goal for Brentford past the keeper from close range, landing right in the middle of the net. Burnley only managed to take one goal back to an own-goal in an error from Miachael Kayode, leaving Brentford comfortably in front going into the second half.

Going into the second half, things were looking bleak for Burnley. However, the Bees were in for a huge shock as their opponents came out with a renewed fighting spirit within them. From the first kick of the half, and after some substitutions, Burnley already looked much better than they did in the first half, and they were rewarded. In the 47th minute, Jaidon Anthony finally got the goal he was looking for; the ball going from the centre of the box, to the centre of the goal from a great assist and ultimately being delivered as a cross by Hannibal Mejbri. Burnley maintained their strength by delivering yet another goal in the 60th minute from a Zian Flemming header, with Mejbri’s cross again being the source of the assist. Now being level with Brentford, they were looking to maintain this scoreline to take home a point, or even push to take all three points from The Bees. When a poor foul by Igor Thiago gave Burnley an opportunity to go ahead of Brentford, they fell short after VAR overturned Flemming’s goal, leaving them still looking for that goal to put them ahead of Brentford. Jubilation, however, came for Brentford in the 3rd minute of stoppage time after a sharp hit from Damsgaard into the bottom left corner of the net from a cross by Rico Henry sent the home fans roaring.
This looked to have well and truly secured Brentford’s victory, but there was still one more attempt to come from Burnley. Ashley Barnes looked to just bring his team back level with a goal, however after much deliberation a handball that needed multiple angles to confirm meant the goal did not stand, leaving Brentford to take all 3 points back home with them.

After full time, an initial reaction taken from Sky Sports’ Ron Walker offered humour to stress how exciting the events of the game were:“That is absolutely prime Barclays. It had everything. Seven goals, two more ruled out, a three-goal comeback and a late winner.
“Smiles stretching all the way back to London from the Brentford players.
“Get that Antonio Conte meme overlayed on Keith Andrews' post-match interview.”
Brentford’s head coach, Keith Andrews, expressed his happiness at the game and its results, according to the Brentford FC website:
“It had a lot in it that game.
“During the first half we played very well, while the second half was clearly a crazy game of football.
“I’m definitely relieved, for sure, but equally I’m proud of the boys being able to grind out the result and find a way to win the game – we speak about that a lot.”
The Brentford joy was also seen when Damsgaard reflected on the events of the game, after scoring two great goals and an assist to take his team to victory. This is what he said, according to the Brentford FC website:
“I was very pleased [to score late on], especially in front of the fans.
“There was a bit of relief; it was a game we were supposed to win, having gone 3-0 up. Then it became a chaotic game, but it was good to win in the end.”
With a team battling relegation and with the performance they put in the second half, Burnley were disappointed with the result but Jaidon Anthony made sure to show his appreciation by clapping to the fans at the ground.
