The Showdown of the European Champions: PSG vs Aston Villa UEFA Super Cup 2026 Recap

Parisians and Villans cross paths once again, but as the reigning European champions this time. In the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, the 2-time Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain faced the newest Europa League champions Aston Villa in Salzburg.
Austria is getting prepared for a promising clash of the French champions and the UEL winners. The teams played against each other only once before, but it’s enough to make everyone feel excited about this game.
PSG stood victorious in their first matchup in the 2024/25 UCL Quarter-Finals and went all the way afterwards to win their first European trophy. The Parisians didn’t stop at one and managed to retain their title, when they beat the recent Premier League champions on penalties in the UCL Final. The French side has a scary record against the English teams in recent years, as they won 12 of the last 15 outings, their last defeat against Aston Villa in the second leg with 3-2. With another win, they could become the only second team in the modern era to be able to retain their UEFA Super Cup title after Real Madrid. Luis Enrique’s PSG doesn’t have any injuries coming to this game, but he still may start a rather weakened team due to their many players recently returned from their World Cup rest.
If the players are deemed to be fit enough, they may at least join the game from the bench. While the returning signing Lucas Digne may be playing against his former team, the new arrival Magnes Akliouche could also make his debut for the Parisians. Alongside their departures; Kolo Muani, Goncalo Ramos and Kang-in Lee, Bradley Barcola may also be doubtful to take part in the Super Cup final due to the rumours of him signing for Liverpool.
Meanwhile, after finishing 6th in the Premier League following their elimination against PSG, Aston Villa made it all the way through to the UEL Final last season and won 3-0 against SC Freiburg in Istanbul. This didn’t only mean the end of their 44-year wait for a European trophy, but also a chance for a possible redemption against PSG. However, the Villans took a blow into their champion squad, as two of the architects of their successful campaign left the team. While Youri Tielemans was heading to Manchester to join the Red Devils, Morgan Rodgers signed for the London blues of Chelsea. In order to replace them, Unai Emery brought Garnacho and Joao Gomes in from the Premier League clubs, waiting for their Villans debut. The Birmingham side also targeted players from Central Europe and signed a 17-year old English striker Brian Madjo from Metz, alongside the club’s record-breaking arrival Johan Manzambi from Freiburg. But the Swiss midfielder was ruled out of the Super Cup due to his knee injury, adding him to the injury list with Amadou Onana and possibly captain John McGinn, who picked up an injury at pre-season friendlies. In addition to the injured ones, the returned World Cup players Konsa, Watkins and Martinez are also not fully certain to be included in Emery’s starting eleven.
So far, there have been 51 UEFA Super Cup matches and 31 of them were won by the Champions League winners, so the odds are against the Villans on that matter. Atletico Madrid was the last Europa League-winning side that lifted the Super Cup 8 years ago. This game also brings two Spanish managers face-to-face for the fourth time in the European stage, but considering their first meeting, this is more like the rematch of the 2015 Super Cup. In the iconic matchup, Luis Enrique’s Barcelona were the victors after extra time with a 5-4 result. PSG manager is 2-1 up in his European history with Unai Emery, so Aston Villa manager has a score to settle in Salzburg.
So, without further ado, here’s how the European champions are lined up for the UEFA Super Cup 2026:

First Half:
The game doesn’t start with much action, both teams make good passing plays, but fail to connect at the front. The first threat comes from Villa’s returning Kamara with a long-range attempt, but Parisians find the first goal. In the 20th minute, Doué’s first goal attempt didn't get past Marco Bizot, even with a deflection from defenders. But in the following position right after his miss, the Frenchman ends up assisting Kvaratskhelia, who smashes the ball to top bins from the left side of the Villa box. Madjo’s lost ball to Neves results in PSG’s opener and he immediately gets busy with redeeming himself.
After PSG’s momentary post-goal control over the game, the young striker found himself in various goalscoring opportunities. He wastes well-targeted crosses from McGinn and Buendía and a link-up play with Hemmings. Kamara joins him in a crowded penalty box chaos, in which his header is intercepted by Safonov. However, when the clock hits the 45th minute, the 17-year old doesn’t turn down his captain’s third perfect cross and scores a clean left-footed tap to top bins. And with that equaliser, the first half comes to an end in a 1-1 draw.
Second Half:
The Villans start the second half with the momentum they took from the first half. They missed chances in the first 15 minutes with McGinn and Buendía, which encouraged PSG to punish them for the second time. In the 62nd minute, Nuno Mendes set Doué up with a very good through ball and the Frenchman dribbled all the way from the right side to put the ball back into Bizot’s net. At first, the assistant referee raises the offside flag, but after the VAR check, the referee confirms the goal and the Parisians lead once again. Aston Villa gives an immediate reaction with a quick passing attacking attempt led by Buendía, but Safonov rises to the occasion by saving Hemmings’ powerful close-range shot. 10 minutes later, Joao Gomes attempts to kick the ball into the net, after Safonov parries another ball to the empty space in front of him. However, the PSG defence comes to the aid of the Russian glove this time to prevent the Brazilian midfielder. In the meantime, the Parisians also create their own chances, but neither the Villa defence nor Bizot are willing to let them extend their gap. As the minutes diminish, both teams get their chances denied and Emi Buendía’s missed header in the dying minutes becomes the last chance wasted in the thrilling game. The referee blows the whistle and the game concludes 2-1 in the favour of PSG.
With this result, PSG retained their Super Cup title and became the fourth team in history to do so. Desire Doué received the Man of the Match award with the winning goal and the opener’s assist. Despite starting with an eleven that isn’t far from their original, Parisians really struggled against their hard-working opponents. After the first goal, they seemed to be in control for a few minutes and they could have scored a second goal in that time as well. But Villans shook off the shock quickly and created the dangers that eventually led to the equaliser. However, in the end, the French side withstood Villa’s attacking bombardment and in the first chance they got, Doué pulled the English team’s plug. A spotlight should also be given to Safonov for his second half performance. The Russian glove denied an immediate second equaliser chance and also stretched well to McGinn’s shot. The Parisians continued from where they left and reminded Europe of the danger they possessed.
On the other hand, Aston Villa fought valiantly until the final whistle, but couldn’t avoid defeat against the Parisians once again. The game didn’t start the way they would want, but the reaction after the goal was valuable and so was the way they played. Emi Buendía was especially good at creating spaces with quick passes and was the centre of almost every attacking build-up that led to an Aston Villa goal threat. He was the heart and soul of his team for the entire 90 minutes, even when he was visibly tired. Captain McGinn did well in the first half against a more explosive and younger Nuno Mendes and gave quality deliveries into the box. Young striker Brian Madjo showed a glimpse of his potential and he gave Willian Pacho lots of hard times in the first half. However, the chances that the 17-year old missed could bring this game to a different ending. If he works hard to improve himself in finding the target and keeps making good use of his physicality, Aston Villa may introduce a very dangerous striker to world football. Unai Emery once again got beaten by his fellow Spaniard colleague, but still his team didn’t go down without a fight. Villa showed promising signs ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, despite missing some key players.
In a nutshell, PSG and Aston Villa gave us a thrilling battle as expected, in which the Parisians won the Super Cup for the second time. After this curtain raiser for European football, the eyes are now turned to the beginning of the top flights and the rapidly approaching European competitions, whose qualifiers are almost over.
