The 2026 Catalan GrandPrix will be one to remember as one of the most chaotic and unpredictable races in modern Motogp. This article will tell you all the things that happened during this chaotic race so you will be all up to speed.

A Red Flag Nightmare
The race was scheduled for 24-laps, but it all turned into high drama on lap 12. The pole-sitter and race leader Pedro Acosta suffered a sudden electronics failure when coming out of Turn 9, with the field closing behind him, Alex Marquez had nowhere he could go, and he ended up clipping the rear of Acosta’s bike at high speed.
Márquez was violently thrown into the trackside wall as his disintegrating bike bounced back into the pack, which resulted in debris flying around everywhere, and one of those pieces hit Di Giannantonio's left arm, which caused him to crash, and many others were caught in the aftermath. The red flag was deployed instantly. Fortunately while Márquez was being hospitalized for evaluation, officials confirmed that he was conscious.
if the first start was enough, the second was even shorter. Right after the restart, Johann Zarco collided with Luca Marini at Turn 1, this collision caused a chain reaction in which Francesco Bagnaia got swept up. In a frightening scene, Zarco’s leg got trapped between the rear wheel of Bagniaia Ducati. The race was Red-flagged again and Zarco was taken to the medical center.

A Third Start
When a shortened 12-lap sprint to the finish line finally got started for the third time. Raul Fernandez made contact with Jorge Martín at Turn 5 on the first lap. While Martín rejoined on track, he finished last and returned to his pit box noticeably furious.
At the front, Acosta tried to hold on, but Di Giannantonie who was riding through the pain of his bruised arm managed to stay close to Acosta. With three laps left, Di Giannantonie made a clean and decisive pass on Acosta to take the lead of the race, he pulled away and won the race with a 1.446 second gap to second place, and also secured his first win since Qatar 2023

Post Race Penalties
While Di Giannantonio was celebrating his victory, the drama wasn't over for a few riders. Fermin Aldeguer crossed the finish line with an unexpected second place. Behind him Ai Ogura took out Pedro Acosta at the last corner, crossing the line in fourth place, but after the race he got a 3 second penalty for the clash with Acosta, so he dropped from fourth to eighth place.
If that wasn't enough, Joan Mir also got handed a 16 second time penalty because of the low tyre pressure, this dropped him to 13th place, Bagnaia was also under investigation, but was spared after date proved his low pressure was caused by a leaking wheel rim from his earlier crash.
Championship Outlook
The only rider who was smiling through most of the chaos, was championship leader Marco Bezzechi. He quietly navigated through the madness to cross the line and get sixth place, and after the post-race penalties his Aprilia got promoted to fourth, and with his title rival Jorge Martín failing to get points, Bezzechhi leaves Barcelona with a more comfortable lead in the standings.
The paddock now gets a small moment to breathe and reset before heading to Mugello for the Italian Grand prix at the end of may.
