Formula 1 has gained countless new fans globally, and much of this growth is due to Drive to Survive. Now entering its eighth season, how does the show recap the events of the season, and what does it leave out?

Drive to Survive is the Netflix hit that, over its eight seasons, has brought in a new wave of fans to the sport from around the world. This year, it does something new, with Netflix teaming up with Apple to broadcast the show on both platforms at the same time. The show recaps the 2025 Formula 1 season, and even in its eighth season, Drive to Survive is reshaping the narrative rather than portraying it in full, leaving loyal fans unhappy. So, what does it miss, and what events does it recap?

The Rookies

As with previous seasons, Drive to Survive Season Eight opens by introducing us to the six rookies of the year and their journeys. The rookie who receives plenty of attention throughout the season is Kimi Antonelli, as the first episode follows a school kid replacing the legend of the sport, Lewis Hamilton. Throughout the series, we see Kimi’s and Mercedes’ difficulties until we reach Kimi’s podium later in the season. It also shows the strength of his teammate, George Russell, who scored a podium before Kimi and more points overall.

However, not all rookies and teams receive the same attention. Oliver Bearman was one of the only rookies excluded, with Haas itself not getting the attention of other midfield teams. Similar comments apply to Visa Cash App RB (VCARB) and Aston Martin, which also experienced leadership changes, and are not a focus. Williams has one episode, addressing the addition of Carlos Sainz and the challenges he faces in comparison to Williams’ veteran, Alex Albon, but does not explain this further. The narrative Drive to Survive is pushing is generational talent. How does Kimi compare to Lewis, and how will Williams’ mainstay, Alex, cope with Carlos’ addition to the team? As a result, other storylines are left behind.

Early Season Storylines: Driver Exits and Team Changes

The first episode introduces other major shifts in the paddock. We see issues such as Jack Doohan and Liam Lawson’s timely exits from Formula 1, and the shift from Red Bull Racing to VCARB, respectively.

We see what happened with Jack Doohan, who openly admits to receiving death threats, which affected his performance in the Alpine, as well as the conversation between Flavio Briatore and Jack. Jack is honest about the impact this had on him. We also get more insight into Liam’s reaction to moving to VCARB, especially after just two races, including Max Verstappen’s reaction.

Although Max is notably absent from an on-camera debrief, we hear from Liam that he was unhappy. Yuki Tsunoda then receives attention, although the series does not show more than Yuki playing the team game and having an eventful home race.

Leadership and Team Principals

Beyond the drivers, Season Eight places strong emphasis on leadership and management styles. Jonathan Wheatley versus Flavio Briatore highlights two different approaches to leading a team, Stake F1 Kick Sauber and Alpine, and how to manage rookie drivers. In these storylines, we also see the introduction of a new team principal leading a new team and, of course, the infamous Nico Hülkenberg podium at Silverstone.

As the season progresses, the focus subtly shifts toward the championship narrative. The team principals are highlighted in Vegas, shifting attention to the world champion storyline, a common way Drive to Survive seasons conclude. This approach feels logical, especially since this season ends with a new world champion.

Alongside the Las Vegas Grand Prix episode, the focus tends to remain on team principals, with Christian Horner and Zak Brown as key figures this season. Fans know that Horner was fired by Red Bull Racing in 2025, and he even received a closing montage. Zak Brown capitalises on McLaren’s success from last year and gives a brief explanation of Papaya Rules, while Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris receive focus when leading the championship. The emphasis on personality shows that this is the priority rather than a full race recap.

Commentary and Narrative Choices

Another noticeable shift this season comes through the voiceover commentary. Alex Jacques and Harry Benjamin receive more voiceover attention than David Croft did in previous years. The commentary used fits the narrative Drive to Survive is portraying, with Ted Kravitz and Craig Slater also appearing in the series. We also see the addition of Nico Rosberg and his commentary on Brocedes in 2016, capturing the tension between Lando and Oscar.

The return of Claire Williams and Will Buxton adds some stability to the season and to the narrative for both new and returning fans. Long-term fans have expressed frustration with some of the on-screen interviews, namely when Christian Horner explains how the Constructors’ Championship works, and Will Buxton explains how qualifying works, as these do not serve established viewers. However, those who want to join for the most recent season may dip into Season Eight first to see where they need to pick up.

I have seen criticism online about inaccuracies being used, such as reactions from one race being used to support another. This is useful in supporting the narrative that Drive to Survive is trying to portray; it helps die-hard fans identify these moments and point them out. Drive to Survive is trying to portray storylines to attract new fans while also giving existing fans behind-the-scenes content, which teams cannot provide themselves.

What Gets Left Out?

Although the main stories are included, a lot of information is still absent. Drive to Survive acknowledges this with a montage at the end of the season, recapping Adrian Newey’s move to Aston Martin, Yuki’s departure from the sport in 2026, and Isack Hadjar’s move to Red Bull. All of this appears in 30 seconds at the end of the series. For committed fans, these are key moments that are absent from the main narrative, including Isack Hadjar’s successful VCARB season, which is important for what happens in 2026.

Compressing Adrian Newey’s move, Yuki’s departure and Hadjar’s promotion into a short closing montage almost feels like an acknowledgement that these stories matter, just not enough to dedicate time to them. For fans who followed this season, these were significant moments that shaped the direction of the sport for 2026. Reducing these to seconds reinforces the gap between what dedicated viewers see as vital and what the series chooses to focus on.

This absence creates tension with existing fans who want more. However, the producers know that Season Eight could still attract new fans, particularly with Lando Norris ending the era of Max Verstappen’s domination. With other seasons running to ten episodes, two additional episodes could have expanded on what existing fans wanted and reduced criticism. This is the first season to have eight episodes instead of ten in such an action-packed year.

At the end of the day, Drive to Survive has plenty of material on the cutting room floor. Eight episodes are not enough to thoroughly cover all twenty-four races from each driver’s and team principal’s perspective. It selects storylines to engage new audiences while still offering valued fans behind-the-scenes access.

Looking Ahead

So, will we see a Drive to Survive Season Nine, and does the series need to continue and change for the future? Cameras were already spotted with Oliver Bearman in a BBC Radio 1 interview, so a new season feels inevitable. With the 2026 regulation changes and the start era of Lando Norris, the real question is whether Drive to Survive will adapt. As the audience becomes more informed and the sport more complex, the series may need to decide if it wants to evolve.
