Baumgartner created global history in October 2012 when he jumped with the Red Bull Stratos. After ascending to nearly 39 km above the Earth in a helium balloon, he descended into the stratosphere by parachute and became the first human being to reach supersonic speeds without mechanical propulsion, reaching Mach 1.25 as he fell freely. The iconic leap established a number of world records and was watched by millions around the globe.

His CV also included BASE jumps from the Petronas Towers, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and the Millau Viaduct, among others, and a carbon-wing skydive across the English Channel in 2003.

Final Flight and Tragic Death

On July 17, 2025, while on holiday in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy, Baumgartner went for a paramotor ride. Witnesses indicated a sudden loss of control—some believed that he might have had a medical emergency while airborne—following which his paraglider cartwheeled down and crashed close to a swimming pool at a hotel.

His death was immediately confirmed upon impact. A member of the hotel staff was also injured by flying debris but not seriously harmed.

A Legacy That Soared

Throughout his lifetime, Baumgartner defined precision, willpower, and calculated courage. His longtime sponsor Red Bull defined him as "precise, demanding and critical—with others, but above all towards yourself."

His death generated an overwhelming sense of loss among thrill-seekers, plane enthusiasts, and people worldwide. Porto Sant'Elpidio's mayor dedicated Baumgartner as "a figure of international stature, a symbol of fearlessness and passion for extreme flight."

In Short:

Felix Baumgartner was a risk-taker who amazed the world, notoriously breaking the sound barrier with his body on a stratospheric jump. His life was tragically cut short in a paragliding crash on July 17, 2025—yet the legend of "the man who made the impossible, possible" endures.

Thank you Felix. May he rest in peace.
