Fenerbahce-Górnik Zabrze UCL Second Qualifying Round Summary

The Polish hopes for a potential debut in the biggest European stage stood against one of the Turkish giants that are searching for their long-awaited return to it. This article covers the Champions League’s Second Qualifying Round matchup between Górnik Zabrze and Fenerbahce.
As the club of the city Zabrze, the Polish side was actually one of the country’s established representatives in Europe back in the days, especially from 60s to mid 90s. However, those regular continental appearances became very rare. Górnik Zabrze’s latest European appearance dates back to the 2018/2019 season, which ended in the UEL Second Qualifying Round against the Slovenian side AS Trencin. After finishing second in Ekstraklasa and winning the Polish Cup last season, Michal Gasparik’s Miners are back for another Second Qualifying Round, but this time in the Champions League. Their most successful run in this competition goes way further back in the calendar, when they made it into the Quarter-Finals of the 1967/1968 season against Manchester United.
Meanwhile, despite being one of the top teams of Türkiye, it’s been a long while since Fenerbahce showed up in the Champions League. Since their last appearance 18 years ago, the Yellow Canaries were searching for a way back into European football’s top competition. The furthest they went in the Champions League was the 2007/2008 season and Chelsea put their run to an end in the Quarter-Finals. By completing last season once again in the second place of the Turkish Super League, the Turkish side earned themselves another attempt to end the UCL drought, starting from the Second Qualifying Round. After only winning the Turkish Super Cup against their fierce rivals Galatasaray and getting eliminated from the UEL in the Knockout Play-Offs by Nottingham Forest, Domenico Tedesco got sacked at the end of his first season with the team. This led Fenerbahce to give their former player and their last manager to win the Turkish Super League, Ismail Kartal a fourth chance in charge. In addition to their staying, experienced players such as Skriniar and Asensio, Canaries also added ex-Premier League players Nathan Ake and Mason Greenwood to their ranks and they were seen as the favourites of this matchup.
With Champions League hopes were at stake, here’s how the first time face-off between these teams went.
First Game:
The first leg of the matchup took place in Kadiköy, Istanbul on 21st of July. Anderson Talisca’s classy freekick in the 37th minute determined the scoreline 1-0 for Fenerbahce. The Canaries used the home advantage well to put pressure on their opponents and take the victory in the first leg. However, despite having the control over the game, the Turkish side struggled with finishing. Bartug Elmaz and Anderson Talisca really seemed to have eyes on goal, but neither Górnik Zabrze defence nor the goalkeeper Philipp Schulze let Fenerbahce increase the gap even more from the first leg. The Miners found rare and challenging chances in the first half and Mert Günok was successful in denying them.
Second Game:
The return game in Zarbze had a more fiery atmosphere, considering all the smoke that the Polish fans filled the stadium with and stopped the game for minutes. Once again, Talisca put the Canaries in front with a penalty in the 12th minute and this time, Miners responded with left-back Michal Sáček at the end of the first half. No more goals were scored in the second half, so the game ended in a 1-1 tie. It was Górnik Zabrze’s turn to make use of their home ground and they managed to put the Turkish side under serious threat. Especially with the increasing intensity of the attacks, Fenerbahce had the conceded goal coming, despite Mert Günok’s best efforts to fend the Polish side off. In that same period, Yellow Canaries could have put themselves in a more comfortable position with their clear goal chance, but once again the lack of clinical finishing by Kerem Aktürkoglu denied them an extended lead. Ismail Yüksek also found an opportunity in the second half, but Schulze made a great close range save to prevent him from scoring.
As a result of the two-legged tie, Fenerbahce won against Górnik Zabrze with 2-1 on aggregate and made it through to the Third Qualifying Round of UCL. Anderson Talisca was the obvious difference maker of the tie with his 2 goals and Mert Günok put in a decent performance in the second leg to not let his Brazilian colleague’s effort be in vain. The Canaries may have won the tie, but their victory was unconvincing. Both matches showed us that a clinical finisher is needed. Despite his performance, Talisca isn’t originally a striker and the wingers weren’t good enough to finish the job, when they could have. An addition of a clinical striker to the team, who can match the opponent defenders’ physical strength, would really help Fenerbahce reach their scoring potential.
On the other hand, the Miners weren’t the favourites coming to this tie, but they’ve shown valiant effort against their Turkish opponents. They couldn’t show much presence in the away game as expected, but they’ve done enough at home to put the favourites in a challenging situation. Górnik Zabrze seemed rather organised and can be proud of their performance, considering there wasn't much expected of them. The goalkeeper Schulze kept the tie alive in Istanbul and also made crucial saves in the second leg. If they could take more chances successfully at the end of the second leg, we could have been talking about a very different tie, but much like Fenerbahce, the Miners also struggled to put the ball back into the opposition goalie’s net. The Polish side will now continue their journey at the Europa League Third Qualifying Round against Ferencváros of Hungary.
In summary, this unexpectedly close tie in the Champions League Second Qualifying Round resulted in favour of the Turkish side Fenerbahce. With this victory over Górnik Zabrze, Yellow Canaries have now guaranteed a spot for European football this season and they’ll be facing Strum Graz of Austria in the Third Qualifying Round of UCL. We’ll see if Fenerbahce can go all the way in the UCL Qualifiers and finally end their long drought of hearing the Champions League anthem.
