Fenerbahce - Olympique Lyon UCL Play-Off Summary

One more step left to participate in the UCL League Phase and only one of these teams gets to take it. In the Champions League Play-Off Round, two historic sides of their respective nations came face-to-face: Fenerbahce of Türkiye and Olympique Lyon of France.

Lyon was once the most feared side in Ligue 1, dominating the 2000s with 7 consecutive league titles. However, Les Gones are nowhere near their glory days recently, especially in financial matters. The club barely convinced the French authorities of their improving financial balance before the 2025/26 season and this led Lyon’s recent key players like Anthony Lopes and Rayan Cherki to leave. But even with this weakened version the historic club managed to finish 4th in Ligue 1 last season to participate in the UCL Qualifiers and to make it into Europa League Quarter-Finals against Celta Vigo, so they’re not to be underestimated. Previously, the French side entered the UCL Qualifiers in the Third Round against Sparta Prague and despite losing the first away game 2-1, they benefitted from their opponent going down to 10-men and bounced back with 3-0 at home to make it through the Play-Offs. 

The last time Les Gones made it into the Champions League was the 2019/20 pandemic season, in which they had a surprising Semi-Final run, pushing Juventus and Manchester City aside, until Bayern Munich woke them up from the dream. Their previous encounters with Turkish sides mostly included the Canaries’ local rivals Besiktas in the last decade, as they exchanged wins with the Black Eagles. Their squad consists of ex-Premier League youth players such as the former Gunner Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Tyler Morton, who joined from Liverpool last season. Paulo Fonseca’s team is led by Lyon’s own Corentin Tolisso, alongside the experienced Argentinian left-back Nicolas Tagliafico. Much like their captain, Les Gones’ strength mostly comes from their midfielders, especially in goal contributions. 

The Czech Pavel Sulc and Corentin Tolisso were top scorers of the team last season and Morton opened the account of midfielders for this season against Sparta Prague. However, the midfield strength in their attack can be turned into a weakness in defence, because the midfielders end up giving big spaces around them that lead to chaos in recovery and to goal threats. Also with their young and rapid wingers Fofana and Nuamah, Lyon can always give full-backs some hard times. Les Gones also added Lois Openda to their ranks from Juventus on loan, however the Belgian striker was never really a consistent finisher throughout his career so far, despite his quickness and dribbling ability.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Canaries of Türkiye took off well in the Champions League so far, defeating Gornik Zabrze 2-1 and Sturm Graz 3-0 on aggregate without losing a game. Those results brought Fenerbahce to the UCL Play-Off Round once again with hopes to end the long absence, but their record in this round is concerning. They cleared an important Third Round obstacle only for the third time since their last participation to UCL in 2008/09, but their previous two attempts, most recently against Benfica last season, were unsuccessful. Maybe the third time can be the charm for the Canaries. 

However, their record against the French teams in the same time period isn’t any better either. Fenerbahce could only win 3 out of 10 games against the French teams in the last 18 years, but none of them ended up in a two-legged tie victory on aggregate. One of those 7 games belongs to the latest clash between the Canaries and Les Gones in Istanbul that concluded with a goalless draw 2 years ago. In addition to their rocky Qualifiers history, their unbeaten run came to an end at their league opener against Genclerbirligi on the weekend with a 2-1 defeat. Despite resting half of their starting eleven on the bench for their Champions League matchup, Fenerbahce dominated the capital city representative, but failed to find the net more than once. They also showed some individual weaknesses against high press and quick-footed wingers, which may give Fofana and Nuamah a chance against the Canaries.

Still, one constant remained, even in the defeat: Anderson Talisca’s goalscoring streak. The Brazilian scored his team’s only goal and extended the goalscoring run to 5 games and he’ll be intending to keep it going against Les Gones in the UCL Play-Offs. Fenerbahce’s search for a striker finally came to an end last week, when the 33-year old Belgian Romelu Lukaku joined the Turkish side. If the chance is given by the manager Ismail Kartal, the ex-Toffees and Red Devils striker is expected to make his debut for the Canaries. Apart from the experienced Belgian, their top scorer Talisca back in his Besiktas days, Matteo Guendouzi and most recently Mason Greenwood on their separate Ligue 1 runs at Marseille possess plenty of experience playing and scoring against Lyon.

With one more step left to make it into the UCL League Phase, here’s how the events occurred in only the second face-off between Fenerbahce and Olympique Lyon.

First Game

The first leg of the tie was hosted by the Canaries in Kadikoy and much like the previous matchup in Istanbul, the game ended in a draw, but this time not in a goalless one. Lyon broke the dreadlock in the 40th minute with a header by Openda, the hosts responded in the 47th minute with a classy close-range strike by Greenwood and the sides settled for a 1-1 draw. 

Fenerbahce started well early on with pressure and came close to a goal in the opening minutes. However, Lyon slowly started to balance out their opponents, as the time passed, then became the ones putting the pressure towards the end of the first half and got rewarded with the first goal. Canaries’ kept losing possession recklessly in the dying minutes of the first half, while Lyon were using the ball more patiently with more careful passes. In addition to that, Tolisso led a shock press towards the Fenerbahce box, in which he stubbornly stole the ball from his opponents and prepared a perfect serve for Lois Openda’s goal.

 The Turkish side came to the second half more determined and Mason Greenwood’s equaliser fired them and the crowd up for more, but the luck wasn't on their side to find the winner. Les Gones were also more eager to attack in the second half, but Ederson successfully denied their attempts in his first appearance of the season. In general, a balanced game took place between the sides, who matched each other in many stats including the scoreline.

Second Game

It was Les Gones’ turn to host in the return game at Parc Olympique Lyonnais and the series of draws between the teams have finally broken. The visitors Fenerbahce won the game 2-1 with goals from a Vedat Muriqi follow-up and Archie Brown header in the first half. Lyon’s only goal came from a clean first-time strike by Malick Fofana in the 61st minute. Tensions rose after the final whistle between Lyon fans, the ex-Marseille player Guendouzi and teams’ staff, as several fights broke out.

Until the first goal, the game was as balanced as the first leg in Istanbul, but the momentum shifted to Fenerbahce’s side, when 2 goals came in 4 minutes. Les Gones attempted to take one back before the first half ended, but Ederson was successful to fend them off. Lyon took the deficit down to one in the second half and could have taken the lead with two other goals they put in the net, however VAR turned down those opportunities. The Canaries also found many openings, but other than their goals, they still struggled to find the target.

As a result of the two-legged tie, Fenerbahce stood victorious with 3-2 on aggregate and made it through to UCL League Phase after 18 years of absence. This win also meant that there will be two Turkish representatives in the Champions League for the first time since the 2007/08 season: Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. It’s an important victory for the Turkish side, considering this time of the year marks a specifically meaningful period of Turkish history. 

Mason Greenwood and Vedat Muriqi stood out in Fenerbahce’s quest to reach UCL football. The Kosovan striker missed a few opportunities in the first leg, but redeemed himself by scoring the first goal of the second leg, he also held up the ball in front to give his teammates time to organise attacks and became a pass station as well. And the English winger was a goal threat/scorer in the first leg and was the provider of Brown’s goal in the second leg too. Especially his long pass to Oguz Aydin before the first goal seemed like Fifa gameplay rather than reality, it did most of the build-up leading to the goal. 

Probably being a former Marseille player and also playing alongside another player like himself in that matter fueled him a little extra for this tie and maybe the same fuel got into Guendouzi a bit too much. Canaries came to the second leg missing important players such as Asensio, Akturkoglu and Gunok, however this situation gave some players a chance to step up and they took it. Oguz Aydin was arguably one of the most effective players of the second leg with his energy and his pass options. Besides, ex-Citizen Ederson wasn’t in the best terms with the fans due to his previous season performance, but his crucial saves in this tie played a big role in Fenerbahce’s victory and gave him an opportunity to make it up to the Canaries. There were doubts and despair creeping in among the Turkish fans, after the home game draw in Istanbul, however Fenerbahce didn’t only manage to qualify into the Champions League, they’ve also overcame their unfortunate cycle in this tournament.

On the other hand, the French side came home for the second leg with what most would consider as an advantage, after securing a draw away. However, Les Gones had small periods of momentum in both games and couldn’t use those periods well enough. Tolisso’s determination in the first game gave Lyon the edge in the first leg, but they failed to put up much of a fight at their home. That 10 minutes after Fofana’s goal was the breaking point of the tie, Lyon’s missed opportunities in that period decided the fate of the game and Boudache’s last minute miss put the cherry on top for the Canaries. Before the second game, Fonseca claimed that they should play close to perfection, in order to get a good result, but there were many lost balls due to passing errors, enough space left for their opponents to capitalise and lack of finishing, except Fofana’s great goal. 

Alongside Tolisso, Openda seemed to be Lyon's most effective player in the tie, but other than his pace and the goal he scored in the first leg, the Belgian striker was his usual self, missing chances and falling into offside traps. This defeat sends Les Gones down to the UEL League Phase, most likely to the Pot 1 of the Europa League draw, where they will continue their Europe path.

In a nutshell, the UCL Play-Off draw between Olympique Lyon and Fenerbahce concluded with the Turkish side’s victory on aggregate and the end of Canaries’ long Champions League drought. They drew Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Aston Villa, Villarreal Shakhtar Donetsk, Slavia Praha and LASK for their UCL return in League Phase. We’ll see how much they’ll be able to progress in the Champions League through the season.
