Fernando Alonso has hinted that the 2026 Formula 1 season could be his last. He has stated that his retirement in 2026 is contingent upon Aston Martin’s performance next year, when new regulations come into effect.

Spanish driver and two-time F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso spoke to the media on Saturday at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix about his future in Formula 1. In Spanish, he stated, “I don't have a clear idea right now. If the car goes well, there's a good chance it will be my last year.”. He added when asked more questions, “Yes, I know I have a better chance of doing well in 2027 or 2028, when there's stability in the team”.
From his responses to journalists today, it's clear that although retirement could be coming soon for the driver, He wants to end his F1 career on a high after a good season. In 2026 and beyond, we could see a complete turnaround from Aston Martin. After Adrian Newey, who is considered to be one of Formula 1's most famous and successful engineers left Red Bull Racing, he joined Aston Martin months later to help develop the car for 2026.
His move to the team triggered lots of discourse among fans, professionals and journalists on how the car's performance would improve once his work for the team came into play. Many believe he is mainly responsible for Red Bull's recent dominant era, helping Max Verstappen achieve his 4 Drivers' World Championships so far.
All in all, 2026 will be exciting for all teams, but particularly Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso. We may or may not see his historical racing career come to an end and the end of next season depending on the car’s performance.
