Setting the Scene

As we head to Round 6 of the Formula 2 season of 2026, the season thus far has been extremely competitive and wide open with 7 different winners in these opening rounds but the most important factor has been consistency where certain drivers have excelled and a certain few have prevailed. The championship is being headed currently by Mini who leads by 6 points from Tsolov in 2nd. Mini so far this season has only had 1 finish outside the top 10 of P11 making him have the best worst place finish of the season so far amongst the front runners. 7 drivers are separated by 38pts currently as we head to Austria this weekend where in the past 2 editions of the race there have been 4 different winners from 4 different teams. Campos, Prema, Invicta and MP Motorsport will aim to reach victory lane once more this weekend.

Track Analysis

The Red Bull Ring is a 2.683 Mile circuit with 10 corners, 3 DRS zones and has plenty of overtaking opportunities. This track is one that really tests different areas of car performance whether that's the straight line speed down the straights, low speed cornering into the Remus hairpin of turn 3 or the medium/high speed cornering of the rest of Sector 2 and 3. This therefore results in the setup work in the only practice session of the weekend as critical to assemble a good balanced car for the drivers that they are comfortable with to springboard into the competitive sessions of the weekend.

Even then the challenge will be ultimately of precision and speed to qualify well around this track. It is one where the margins are tight as ever where a tenth or two could be the difference between a front row start or barely making the top 10. Track limits will play a factor this weekend as well where pushing beyond the limits in the search for lap time will have ongoing consequences throughout the weekend's action. In the race, Drs trains will be commonplace therefore making it more difficult to overtake unless the driver in front isn't within the second window of the car ahead of them. The soft and the supersoft tyre compounds will be used for this weekend

Drivers to Watch

  • Tsolov - Tsolov is a driver who has had exceptional race pace this year and has so far taken 2 feature race wins already this season. There isn't much doubt that he will be at the sharp end of the grid once more having taken a prior victory around the Red Bull Ring in a F3 sprint race back in 2024.

  • Mini - Having taken 6 podiums this season this driver has been consistently personified so naturally you would expect Mini to be fighting at the front once again. Although Mini had a tough first F2 outing at this track last year, he has picked up 2 podiums at this circuit in his stint in F3 so can rely on this to bounce back in MP Motorsport machinery which took the F2 win here last season.

  • Stenshorne - A driver who has been unlucky this season so far where the results haven't reflected his performances. Austria is a track where this driver took a Feature race in F3 last season so has underlying strong performances here that he can rely upon to help kickstart his season.

  • Beganovic -  This is a driver who has also had desperately bad luck this season losing 2 possible feature race podiums having been running P2 before reliability took those away from him. He will come to Austria knowing a strong result is paramount to ensure he stays in the title fight. Dino didn't have the race he would have wanted at the Red Bull Ring last year but has decent F3 form at this track having taken a podium and a top 5 finish showing particularly strong pace on both occasions.

  • Camara - A driver who has had incredible qualifying pace this year and is aiming for 3 pole positions in a row I feel that it is easily possible to see this driver fighting for the win this weekend. Invicta also have had good results here in the past and with the title fight heating up, Camara can ill-afford his 2 rivals ahead of him to get further ahead.

There is no doubt that racing at Spielberg has always provided mouth-watering action and this weekend is set up to be just as intense and enjoyable race weekend. Here is your race time for this weekend.

Free Practice - 10:05 Friday BST

Qualifying - 14:55  Friday BST

Sprint Race - 13:15  Saturday BST

Feature Race - 9:10  Sunday BST

The Austrian Mountains this weekend will roar with the sounds of race cars who will battle it out for victory. Who will come out on top?
