The day we've all been waiting for is here! FIFA World Cup 2026 is back and it is bigger than ever!

THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2026
The FIFA World Cup will commence from 11th June 2026 and will go on till 19th July 2026. A total of three countries will be hosting this year's World Cup, and those countries are, USA, Canada and Mexico. This year will be the third year that world cup matches are set in three different countries; that has only happened in 1970, 1986 and now, in 2026. In the USA, 11 cities will host the matches, including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle. In Mexico, Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey will host the matches and in Canada, Toronto and Vancouver will be hosting the world cup matches.
NEW 48 COUNTRIES FORMAT
This world cup will also show many changes as this year, a total of 48 countries will be participating in the competition instead of the usual 32 countries format. This means there will be a new knock-off stage as the Round of 32 and rest is the same. Because of this new format, many new countries have made their way into the world cup stage.
The qualified countries are:
USA, Canada and Mexico, as they are hosting. 16 UEFA nations: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czechia, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. From the AFC, we have Australia, Iraq, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan. From CAF nations: Algeria, Cabo Verde, DRC, Cote D Ivorie, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia. From CONCACAF: Curacao, Haiti and Panama. From CONMEBOL: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay. And lastly from OFC, New Zealand.
Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan will be in a world cup for the very first time. Norway and Scotland will be returning after 1998, Turkiye after 2002, Iraq after 1986, Congo DR and Haiti after 1974, South Africa, Paraguay and New Zealand after 2010 and Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ivory Coast will be returning to the world cup after last playing in 2012.
Many new nations got their spot in the world cup this year but a few usual nations did not. Nigeria, Cameroon, Costa Rica, Denmark and Wales unfortunately did not qualify for the world cup and most shockingly, Poland and Italy also did not qualify. Italy and Poland feature some of the best players in the premier league as well as other leagues but despite that, they weren't able to qualify.
POTENTIAL WINNERS
Argentina will be entering the field with defending their FIFA WORLD CUP 2022 champions title, ready to do anything to defend their position. France will be entering as the 2018 world cup champions, also they made it to the final play off in the fifa world cup 2022. Spain will be entering as the Euro Cup 2024 champions and they are also highly favoured by many people to win the world cup. Portugal will be entering as the Nations League 2025 champions, also favoured by many people to win the world cup. England are also highly favoured as a talented multigenerational team is secured with a new head coach, Thomas Tuchel. Netherlands is predicted as the dark horse among other nations, although it is also predicted to win this year's world cup, as predicted by a German economist who got the last three world cup winners correct. Among the predicted dark horses are Belgium, Norway, Croatia, Brazil, Morocco and Senegal.
OFFICIAL MATCH BALL: ADIDAS TRIONDA
It features a four panel design, thermally bonded together, and that is the smallest number of panels fifa has used for its official ball. Its design was released in October, 2025 and it has been manufactured in Sialkot, Pakistan. Its surface is textured with debossed macro and micro patterns intentionally that gives the ball the ability to improve in-flight stability, swerve and grip in wet conditions (swerve: changing direction suddenly). It also features CONNECTED BALL TECHNOLOGY that includes 500hz inertial measurement unit, IMU chip that is going to send precise movement data to VAR systems in real life, making VAR decisions and offside decisions more easy to decide. Its design features tricolor wave patterns, a red maple leaf representing Canada, green with an eagle for Mexico and blue stars for the US.
RULE CHANGES
There will be some anti time wasting rules that feature, 5 second countdowns, Referees will visually hold up five seconds for throw-ins and goal kicks. If the ball isn't in play after the countdown, the opposition is awarded a throw-in or a corner kick, respectively.10-Second Substituted Exit, Players being subbed off have 10 seconds to leave the field from the nearest boundary line. If it takes longer, the incoming substitute can only enter at the first stoppage after 1 minute has been over. 60-Second Medical Wait, Outfield players who require on-pitch medical treatment must remain on the sidelines for one minute after the match restarts. Some VAR Enhancements as, Incorrectly awarded corner kicks can now be reviewed and overturned, provided it doesn’t delay the match's restart. VAR can now penalize attacking fouls that occur right before a set-piece (free kick or corner kick) if it directly leads to a goal, penalty, or in some cases a red card and VAR can intervene on clearly incorrect second-yellow card red cards and cases of mistaken identity. Also, Players who cover their mouths with hands, arms, or shirts during on-pitch confrontations will automatically receive a red card. Players leaving the field in protest of a referee's decision will be given a red card. Teams that intentionally cause a match to be abandoned will immediately forfeit the game as we saw in the AFCON CUP FINAL that the final result was overturned due to the implementation of this rule. A mandatory 3-minute hydration break will take place near the halfway mark of each half (around the 22nd minute) for all matches. Also, If an injured goalkeeper is receiving treatment, players from both teams are no longer allowed to leave the pitch to consult with their coaching staff.
Now with this we can clearly see that ALOT of VAR involvement will be there, almost more than ever. Also there will be some strict rules to prevent players from wasting their time. That leaves us with one question, will players find a new way to waste time on pitch? We'll only find that out after watching the matches.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, a record 48 teams, three host nations and football's biggest stars will be competing in the FIFA WORLD CUP 11th June onwards. This year we'll see a different version of football, with its collaboration including traditional and new technology. More nations will participate as of the new format so the watching population is directly increased. The only question that remains is, Who will bring the FIFA WORLD CUP 26 trophy home.
