After the last checkered flag of the season, the winter break follows, but this winter break has been different from the rest. Processes and Formula One as we know it will be changed going into 2026. So what’s next?

DRS will stay in the past and F1 introduces MOM, which will change racing forever. MOM is completely different from DRS witht different mechanics and technology used to minimise drag and maximise overtaking potential. DRS was activated with a manual button whiched opened a flap on car’s rear wing. The opening allowed air to pass through and reduced drag, which in turn enabled drivers to go up to 12km faster within specified DRS zones. MOM on the other hand, will be a mechanism that can be manually activated by the drivers and will give the car a small boost to overtake. MOM can be activated throughout any part of the track but the car has to be within a second or less from the car in front in order to use it.

The cars of 2026 will also become smaller, initiating better racing and more overtakes in all tracks such as Monaco which is known for having very few opportunities.

The new Formula 1 engine marks a significant move toward cleaner and smarter racing. It increases electric power use and brings in fully sustainable fuels. The new power unit offers high performance and supports environmental responsibility. These changes aim to keep racing exciting and inspire innovations that can impact everyday car technology.

Two new teams will join the grid: Sauber will change to Audi and Candilac will join the grid as a new 11th team, utilising Ferrari’s engines. The drivers for Audi will be the same as they were at Sauber in the ‘25 season, Bortoleto and Hülkenberg, whilst Candilac will bring back two returning faces to the grid, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez.

All in all, it seems like the 2026 season will be a very interesting and unpredictable year for Formula1. With all the changes happening, from the new engines to the two new teams, it is likely that it will be an enjoyable season.
