Today, one of the most highly anticipated remaches unfolded on one of the most highly anticipated stages. Jannik Sinner faced Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Men’s Singles Championships at Wimbledon. After their last meeting at the French Open earlier in the year, in which Alcaraz took victory over Sinner, tennis fans have been anxiously awaiting the reunion and rematch of these two players, already declaring this rivalry one of the greatest we have seen.
But ultimately, it was Jannik Sinner who came out on top, delivering an incredible performance, befitting of a Wimbledon champion.

Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner, current world number 1, delivered clinical performances time and time again at Wimbledon this year, and has more than proved himself worthy of being “the best in the world”. He was on a roll, going through a stint of not dropping a set in the early stages of the tournament. In his Round of 16 match, opponent Grigor Dimitrov had to retire due to an injury which meant Jannik secured his spot in the quarter-finals. This was obviously not the way Sinner intended to get through to the quarters, with him stating, “I don’t take this as a win at all, it’s just a very unfortunate moment to witness”. Sinner also wished Grigor a “speedy recovery” and has recently been praised on social media for his sportsmanship and class as he carried Dimitrov’s bags off court for him and took the time to acknowledge the talent of the player in his post-match interview.
In the quarter finals Sinner defeated opponent Ben Shelton in straight sets (7:6, 6:4, 6:4), the aforementioned elbow injury not acting as a hindrance this time around. He then went on to play Novak Djokovic in his semi-finals match, winning 6:3, 6:3, 6:4. With that, Jannik Sinner became a Wimbledon finalist, closing in on his first Wimbledon win.
Sinner’s career has been exceptional, his rise up through the ranks being nothing short of meteoric. He is already a multi-slam winner, claiming victory at the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025 and the US Open in 2024. He has already etched his name in the history books, becoming the first Italian to achieve the World Number 1 ATP ranking, and is a national hero, having led Italy to Davis Cup victories in 2023 and 2024. Jannik, despite recent controversies, is a decorated player and a formidable opponent; a tennis machine with icy cool composure.

Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz, current world number 2, had an equally impressive run at The Championships this year. He faced off against Cameron Norrie in the quarter finals, beating him 6:2, 6:3, 6:3. He then overcame Taylor Fritz in the semis, eventually securing victory after a tie-break in the 4th set. Alcaraz comes into this year’s tournament with a winning streak to continue and a title to defend. He has won the tournament the past 2 years, securing victory over Novak Djokovic both times, so comes into this tournament not only with the experience but also handling the pressure that comes with being the reigning champ. He goes in with the hopes that he can leave as the 5th man in the Open Era to win Wimbledon 3 times in a row (affectionately known as a “three-peat”), joining the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz has been on fire this year, winning titles at the French Open, Queens, the Italian Open, the Monte Carlo Masters and many more. This year alone, he has broken multiple records, including celebrating his 250th career victory (Queens) and maintaining a 24 match winning streak. In short, he has been absolutely unstoppable.
In his wider career, Alcaraz has achieved so much in such a short amount of time, already solidifying himself as one of the greats of “the new era of tennis”. He has won 5 slam titles, multiple ATP Masters 1000 titles, numerous ATP 500 and 250 wins, and picked up a silver Olympic medal along the way. Carlos clearly has the talent, and has the trophies to back it up. Most notably, he became the youngest player ever to reach world No1 status, at just over 19 years old.
Carlos has become known for his mental toughness and unwavering commitment in the face of adversity, always striving for perfection and ever accepting anything less.

The Finals
The Men’s Singles Final started off fairly even - with both Alcaraz and Sinner pulling out incredible performances and creating a truly thrilling finale. But as it reached the 3rd set, a clear winner emerged. After losing the first set (4:6) to Alcaraz, Sinner proceeded to win three sets in a row (6:4, 6:4, 6:4) thus claiming his maiden victory at The Championships. Sinner played excellently, delivering high-powered serves and making Alcaraz work for every single point. With this victory, Sinner becomes the first Italian to win the Men’s Singles Title and affirms his legacy in the tournament,
The on and off-the-court relationship between Alcaraz and Sinner has all the makings of an incredible rivalry which promises to captivate audiences for years to come. It is clear that both Alcaraz and Sinner have an immense amount of respect for each other and are both very appreciative of each other’s talents. They also both show no signs of stopping any time soon. Alcaraz, in his post-match interview, assured the crowd that we would ‘absolutely’ see him back on Centre Court next year, and with Jannik’s maiden win, we can definitely expect to have him back at The Championships in 2026. Speaking on his own win, Sinner poked fun at Alcaraz saying “you have already two” in reference to Wimbledon trophies, recognising the talent of his opponent whilst also acknowledging that now is his time to bask in the glory of winning Wimbledon.
Today’s finals were exhilarating and a true masterclass form both players, who always put on a show any time they meet. Hopefully, we will be lucky enough to see this rivalry play out over the next few years and there will be many more slam titles in the future for Alcaraz and Sinner.
