Rounds 9 and 10 of the 2025/26 FIA Formula E World Championship took place in Monaco this weekend, with Mahindra’s Nick De Vries emerging triumphant from Saturday's race, and reigning champion Oliver Rowland clinching the win for the second year in a row on Sunday for Nissan.

This year’s Monaco E-prix covered two rounds of the formula E championship, with 2 free practice sessions, qualifying, and Round 9 on the Saturday, followed by the third free practice, another qualifying, and Round 10 on the Sunday. Round 9 also included a mandatory pitboost for all cars, requiring them to take a 30 second mid race pitstop where they received more energy.

The driver’s championship was tight going into the weekend, led by Pascal Wehrlein  (Porsche), followed by Jaguar’s Mitch Evans in second. Closely behind in third came Edoardo Mortara (Mahindra racing), with Nissan’s Oliver Rowland completing the top four, all separated by less than 20 points heading into the two rounds.

Round 9 (Race 1)

Saturday’s race saw Dan Ticktum starting on pole position for the first time in his Formula E career, followed by Nick De Vries, Maximillian Gunther, and Mitch Evans. Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Muller completed the top six to make an all Jaguar third row.

Ticktum got away well from the start line, maintaining a slower pace and keeping the field behind him in order to conserve his power.

The safety car was brought out during Lap 4 due to contact between Jake Dennis (Andretti) and Nick Cassidy (Citroen), with Cassidy accidentally squeezing Dennis into the wall resulting in a front left puncture and retirement for the Andretti driver. Cassidy’s Citroen suffered damage to the front left suspension, however a quick visit to the pits meant the Kiwi driver was able to rejoin the race in 19th place.

Lap 9 saw more contact, with Porsche’s Nico Muller and Citroen’s Jean-Eric Vergne clashing as Muller attempted to overtake round the outside, though Vergne managed to hang onto the position.

The two Porsches of Nico Muller and Pascal Wehrlein came together on Lap 13, as Muller drove into the rear of his teammates’ car resulting in front wing damage for him, and a rear puncture for the German driver in front. As Wehrlein ducked into the pits to get a new rear tyre, Oliver Rowland reported an unrelated puncture on his front right.

Pole sitter Dan Ticktum was forced to let go of first place as he entered the pits for the pitboost, leaving the door open for Nick De Vries to emerge in front as the former left the pits. Mitch Evans snagged second place, separating Ticktum and De Vries after the pit boost window. Following the top three came Da Costa’s Jaguar in fourth place.

After a few laps of close racing, Da Costa (Jaguar) attempted an overtake on Ticktum (Cupra) which caused the two cars to come together on Lap 27, resulting in the latter losing a rear wheel and causing the yellow flag to be brought out. The damage to Da Costa’s car forced him to retire from the race, dashing Jaguar’s hopes of a podium in Monaco with just two laps to go until the finish line. Dan Ticktum finished in third on the road but was given a drive through penalty after the race which was converted to a 33 second penalty, moving him down to 12th place.

The race was therefore won by Nick De Vries, and 44 races since he last stood on the top step, he also secured Mahindra’s first race win in almost five years. In second came Mitch Evans, who became the new championship leader, followed by Josep Maria Martí, whose race finish benefitted from the last minute collision between Ticktum and Da Costa.

Another successful driver in Monaco was Sebastien Buemi, who began the race in 18th but managed to finish in 5th, despite how notoriously difficult overtaking can be in Monaco.

Round 10 (Race 2)

Round 10 began with the clashing duo from the previous day in front, Dan Ticktum in pole position for the second day in a row, with Da Costa qualifying just behind him. The green flag racing didn’t last long, however, as a collision between Da Costa and Mortara on Lap 1 resulted in the former facing the wrong way on the circuit, and brought out a momentary yellow flag. Mortara later received a 10 second time penalty for causing the collision at turn 10.

The lead of the race changed hands countless times over the 28 laps, first slipping away from Ticktum in the early laps at the hands of Mortara, and later being taken by the championship leader Nick Evans on Lap 11. However, he later slipped back down the order, with Mortara reclaiming the lead.

Taylor Barnard found himself in the barrier on Lap 26 after attempting an overtake on Mitch Evan’s Jaguar, just before Oliver Rowland took the lead of the e-prix.

Ultimately Rowland crossed the line first, emerging victorious in Monaco for the second year in a row, and achieving his first win of the 2025/26 season. Felipe Drugovich was hot on his heels for second, followed by Antonio Felix Da Costa, who scored a podium despite his early setback.

This leaves the championship lead in the hands of Mitch Evans, who has a comfortable 19 point lead over Oliver Rowland, the latter of which sits at 109 points in total this season. Third in the drivers standings is Edoardo Mortara, who finished 5th on Sunday bringing back 10 valuable points. As for the team championship, Jaguar TCS overtake Porsche to take the top spot with 208 points, while Mahindra remain in third place.

All eyes will now be on the next round, which is due to take place just over a month from now in Sanya on the 20th of June.
