Anti-Queer sentiments are gaining influence worldwide, which includes the world of motorsports. This means we are facing a big challenge as a sport and a community. How do we make sure that we as motorsport fans, drivers and all other people involved make sure that everyone feels welcome and safe to be themselves. As part of the sunshine project I will talk to you about queer motorsports.

The Struggle

Motorsport has always been a mainly cis-hetero male domain. It has left much to be desired in terms of LGBTQ+ inclusivity. This doesn’t just affect the drivers, it affects everyone involved in the sport. Whether it’s being scared to come out because a series races in countries that do not accept homosexuality, getting hate online or in the paddock, homophobia can change a racing career. Even though being LGBTQ+ has no impact on mental health directly, statistics show that people who are a part of this community are 2 to 3 times more likely to experience mental health issues. In a sport that is already incredibly hard on your mental health this can start taking a big toll. Combine this with the fact that employers are less likely to sign a queer driver or employee due to fear of backlash, and you will start to see just how much harder it is for LGBTQ+ people to make it in motorsport.

However there is a little beacon of hope, people and organizations who keep fighting for the rights of this community.

Racing Pride

You couldn’t write anything about LGBTQ+ representation in motorsport without talking about racing pride, the organisation for all things LGBTQ+. Since its founding in 2019, it has started partnerships with McLaren Racing, BWT Alpine Formula 1 Team among others. Their vision is to promote LGBTQ+ inclusivity by highlighting the achievements of lbtq+ people, encouraging increased participation and providing opportunities for the motorsport community and fans to become visible allies.

Their partnerships and ambassadors function as role models for people in the community. They help spread racing pride’s message: motorsport is for everyone.

LGBTQ+ Support In Formula 1

Ever since the ban on political statements was instated by the FIA, there has been less focus on LGBTQ+ inclusivity in formula 1. This does not mean there isn’t any. There are multiple F1 teams that are partners with organisations like racing pride and drivers have stated their support before. Lewis Hamilton notably wore a rainbow helmet in 2021 during a free practice session in Qatar, something he could have been arrested for. It’s these acts of selflessness that make an impact.

Queer rep on the biggest stage in motorsport isn’t just a publicity stunt, it’s a twinkling of hope for young queer drivers, and queer people in general that they deserve to be a part of motorsport. It can be simple, a rainbow logo on a helmet, or car, but it can mean so much more.

The Solution

Where the struggle is difficult and hard to comprehend fully, the solution can be very simple. Keeping someone's sexuality separate from their racing talent. Motorsport is a place of innovation, a leader in sports and engineering, so why not on the topic of inclusivity and diversity? In a world where fitting in is increasingly more difficult, motorsports should be a place that connects people, not divides them.

Sport is for everyone, motorsport is for everyone. Celebrate diversity, and never judge a racing driver for their way of love. Because even though queer drivers may not be the standard, they deserve sunshine.
