2025 as a regular driver for the Nielsen Racing Team in United Autosport was how Fabio Scherer envisioned his career this year. But it didn't stay that way, the team had found another driver and now the man from Engelberg was left with nothing. But let's start from the beginning.
His career began in karting, as it did for several other drivers. He drove in the Swiss karting championship in 2014 and won it.
Two years later, he switched to the German Formula 4 and competed there for Jenzer Motorsport. There he won a race and scored 26 points, finishing the season in 17th place. At the same time, he raced in the Italian F4 and finished in 29th place. Before moving up to, he had his best Formula 4 season in 2017, finishing in fifth place. The champion at the time was Juri Visp, who was locked into Red Bull a few years later.
The young man raced in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for two years before switching series.
The Swiss talent already competed in the DTM in 2020, back then for WRT Team Audi Sport. Two top 5 results in his debut season.
New season, new luck. In 2021, the Swiss signed a contract with United Autosport in the FIA World Endurance Championship. There he took two victories, one in Spa and Monza, and finished his season in 5th place. In 2023, he was runner-up in the LMP2 category with his team (Inter Europol Competition). The long-awaited victory finally came at the 24-hour race in Le Mans. But something happened before that: Scherer injured his foot before the race, pain that would not go away. But he showed great resilience and took the victory. Not just a normal victory. One that went down in the history books forever, with many emotions and admirations.
A year later, he returned to United Autosport. There he finished 25th with the Nielsen Racing team. And was also supposed to be a regular driver there in 2025. But fate had other plans for him.
For a long time, it wasn't clear where the young Swiss driver would be heading in 2025. He was actually under contract with Nielsen Racing to drive the 24 Hours of Lemans, but there was no longer a place for him. Two days before the official test days in the DTM, the HRT team announced him as the new driver.
The first race weekend started in Oschersleben, Germany. Before we get started, I would like to explain the racing to you.
On Friday there are two practice sessions. Saturday started with qualifying and then Race 1, where the first 15 drivers are awarded points. And on Sunday morning the next qualifying and the following race in the afternoon will take place.
The training sessions on Friday were well done, Scherer showed himself from a good side, but there is still room for improvement. The racing driver finished the only qualifying session in 20th place. The first of two races followed in the afternoon, in which he finished 19th. Scherer still did not feel 100 percent comfortable with the driving style of his car. The team tried everything on the following day to adapt the driving style to Fabio. It worked better, he felt much more comfortable, although the result in qualifying was not what they had imagined. In the race he made a few overtaking manoeuvres, which was a step in the right direction.
In the end, he finished 18th, which is not so far away from the points. Although we just missed out on points, the positive impression outweighs the negative. They had made great progress and he was pleased with what they had achieved this weekend. He was quite satisfied with his improved performance, as he was able to keep up with his team-mate, who had more DTM experience. The team will now concentrate on the next race weekend, which will take place from 23-25 at the Lausitzring. The team's goal is to finish in the points, and if they work consistently like this it will only be a matter of time.
Fabio said: “I feel very comfortable in the team, both the professionalism and the passion are noticeable, and he is very happy to be part of the DTM again.
