It is that time of year again once more as the FREC championship gets back underway this weekend of the 24th to the 26th of April. It is surely gonna be a season of massive adaptation for the drivers and the teams which will for sure throw a lot of thrills and spills into the mix every race weekend with the aim to stay consistent and build a championship winning campaign at the forefront of everybody's minds.
A Seasonal Introduction
This 2026 season will be like no other in this series history as huge changes of the car chassis for the first time in the series 7 seasons completed thus far. This is due to Alpine leaving the championship. Toyota has now inherited Alpine's role with the new chassis being the Tatuus T-326 in which the drivers and teams will have to get to grips with.

Another huge change for this 2026 season is the fact that 2 teams will be departing the grid in Saintéloc Racing who have been in the series for 3 seasons and AKCEL GP who joined last season for 6 rounds only will not return for a first full campaign. These two manufacturers will be replaced by MP Motorsport who will return after a 1 year hiatus and well-known New Zealand Rodin Motorsport makes its debut in the championship.
As well as teams shifting around, the driver roster has done likewise with many drivers moving on from the series which allows the welcome of new arrivals. The grid welcomes 24 new rookies who are yet to complete a full season in the series which offers significant opportunities to prove yourself to be one of the best amongst the grid. The remaining drivers who don't fit the rookie status won't gain from their experience in the series as greatly as prior as with the new chassis it's a learning curve for everyone.
Revised Race Weekend and Calendar Shifts
One of the catalogue of changes in the 2026 season sits in the logistical side because due to Misano and Circuit De Catalunya not returning to the calendar in 2026, the season has been reduced to 8 rounds. To compensate for the lost races, a third race has been added to 3 rounds of Monza,Red Bull Ring and Imola. This isn't a series first of a 3 round weekend but it is reshaped compared to before as we are divulging into pastures new as an enticing sprint race has been added to the weekend schedule. This is just another aspect of the series that they will have to be acclimatised to.
On these selected weekends, the schedule will be as follows with the top 12 of Qualifying 1 reversed for the sprint race of Race 1. Race 2 will be based on Race 1 results and race 3 is the order of Qualifying 2. The sprint has naturally reduced points with only 10 Pts for the winner compared to 22 Pts in the main races. Despite this, this will be a fascinating opportunity for drivers of especially the midfield who may not be able to fight at the front all the time but will have such opportunity in these sprint races to duel it out for wins and podiums.
FREC's New Era Ascends into the Styrian Alps
The Styrian hills welcome the drivers onto this incredible old-school race circuit of the Red Bull Ring for the first time as the season opener for this series. This circuit has it all from long straights ideal for overtaking, long sweeping turns and tight technical hairpins and is a true test of the synergy between the drivers and their racing machinery. The circuit is shorter than most at just under 2.7 miles and has a total of 10 turns.
Certain teams in FREC have enjoyed some past successes at Spielberg and will look to replicate this weekend.

Prema is clearly the dominant force here at the Red Bull Ring. Will their dominant history here be replicated this weekend?
At this exact track in the final part of the pre-season testing schedule, the G4 Racing team looked pretty encouraging with 2 of their 3 drivers topping sessions across the few days in Marcus Saeter and Saqer Almaosherji. Sebastian Wheldon, son of the great Dan Wheldon, also topped a session which is a strong step on MP Motorsport's return to the grid. As always testing is just numbers and we advise to take it with a pinch of salt. It is a very competitive season opener with a stage ready for a new contender to rise to the occasion.
