2 Years Later - A Recap on Oscar Piastri’s Formula One Career Since Hungary 2024

Ever since winning his first Formula One Grand Prix back in Budapest in 2024, Oscar Piastri hasn’t stopped - on and off track.

It has now officially been two years since Oscar Piastri claimed his maiden victory at Hungaroring and since then, a lot has changed. From leading the championship, claiming his first grand slam, and helping his team obtain two Constructors Championships, the Australian driver has not stopped.

On July 20th, 2024, Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris locked out the front row, making it the first time a McLaren driver pairing had done so since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix. The next day, he achieved his first win in Formula One while also marking McLaren’s first 1-2 finish in 3 years. Despite the team orders controversy that this race brought up, Piastri managed to claim his second ever victory in the sport just four races later in Azerbaijan. These two wins — along with the several podiums that he achieved — helped him score fourth position overall in the WDC, a personal best for him compared to 9th the previous season, and helped McLaren win their first Constructors Championship in 17 years.

2025 brought several new heights for the Aussie, starting in China, where he claimed his first win of the season at only the second race. He then went on to win three races in a row — Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Miami — climbing him up to first position in the WDC and making him the first Australian to lead the championship since Mark Webber back in 2010. Later in the season, Piastri ended McLaren’s 27 year wait for a Grand Slam (starting from pole position, setting the fastest lap, leading every lap of the race, and then winning the race) at the Dutch Grand Prix. This also made him the first Australian to ever achieve this feat and added him to the exclusive list of only 26 Formula One drivers at that time who had achieved a grand slam in their career. Overall, Piastri ended up third in the WDC after shattering records and setting new heights for himself all season. 

As for the current 2026 season, Piastri’s year started off rocky with two DNS’s in Australia and China due to a crash on the reconnaissance lap and electrical issues with his car respectively. However, he recovered with two podium finishes in Japan and Miami. Since then, he has been consistently in the points and is currently in 6th position in the WDC despite his season start issues. With his teammate Norris currently in 5th position, the pair have brought McLaren up to 3rd position in the Constructors Championships.

Outside of Formula One, Piastri has been nominated and has won several awards since his first win such as the Best Driver at the ESPY Awards (nominee), the Lorenzo Bandini award in 2025 for his achievements in Formula One (won), and The Don Award for his achievements as an Australian sportsman (won). 

Ever since his first podium back in Japan 2023 in his maiden Formula One season, Oscar Piastri has been setting the standard for future Australian drivers left and right and breaking records in the sport overall. Despite only being in his fourth year in the sport, Piastri has proved himself able to fight and bounce back time and time again.
