British Formula 1 driver George Russell has renewed his contract with Mercedes F1
Team.

The news of a contract renewal comes after months of reported struggles for the British driver and team principal, Toto Wolff, to reach an agreement. Russell has driven for the team since 2022, filling the place of Valteri Bottas, one of next season's Cadillac drivers. He made his Formula 1 debut in 2019 for Williams after winning the Formula 2 Championship in 2018. Being a long-standing Mercades Academy Driver, he's stayed with the team for years, and he is now on track to continue.
Toto Wolff had previously stated that he wanted George's contract to be signed by August this year, which did not happen. It was clear that there were some issues in the renewal process that accounted for the delay. Many fans speculate that Russell and his team were asking for too much or that Max Verstappen's trips to Italy with Toto, after months of being unhappy with his car, may have made him think twice about who he wanted to sign for 2026 and beyond.
But finally, the deal has been done, giving Russell another year racing in the pinnacle of motorsport. Speaking to the media today, Russell said, “I am really proud to be continuing our journey together. Next year will mark my 10th year since I signed with Mercedes back in 2017.”
This new signing, along with Antonelli, which was also announced simultaneously, leaves only 4 seats open on the grid for next season with 1 at Redbull, 2 at VCARB and 1 at Alpine.
