Coenen Brothers Set To Leave MXGP for AMA SuperMotocross in 2027

Belgian twins Lucas and Sacha Coenen will leave MXGP for AMA SuperMotocross from 2027 onwards as they sign a multi-year contract extension with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

Belgian twin brothers Lucas and Sacha Coenen will leave the MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship to begin a new chapter in the United States. They have signed a multi-year contract extension with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as they transition to AMA SuperMotocross from 2027 onwards. 

Lucas will contest the AMA 450SX/MX class while Sacha moves into the 250SX/MX class. However, the East/West scheduling has yet to be confirmed. 

“I am pumped to be able to confirm that we’ll be in the U.S. next year,” Lucas Coenen said. “When we went to Thunder Valley it was amazing and we’ve both also been bringing the results for the team in GPs until some bad luck with the hip problem.” 

“2027 will be a big change for the family but it’s a dream to make this move,” he added. “Thanks to everyone at Red Bull KTM for making this next chapter possible.” 

Sacha shares the same excitement. “We still have big goals for the rest of MX2 this year but to have this deal confirmed means we can focus on the target and also get organized for 2027,” he said. “There will be a lot to learn but it’s what we want to do. It’s very cool to have this opportunity. I can’t wait already.” 

This move was expected within the paddock but has now become official. 

The two brothers have emerged as two of the most exciting talents in motocross over recent seasons. Lucas finished 5th and 2nd in his two full-time MX2 years before classifying as 2025 MXGP runner-up in his rookie campaign. With this, he became the sport’s youngest-ever premier class GP winner. 

Meanwhile, Sacha has been a front-runner in MX2, claiming at least one Grand Prix win in each of the last three seasons. He has claimed the red plate in 2026 as he remains in title contention for the championship. 

“We know this is an amazing chance for both Lucas and Sacha to achieve new goals in their young careers after reaching the top of their Grand Prix categories in the world championship,” said Robert Jonas, KTM Director Offroad Racing. 

“It’s one of Red Bull KTM’s strengths that we can coordinate and provide these opportunities in different series for talented winners like the Coenens,” he said. “We’ve believed in their potential for quite some time. There are still some Grand Prix wins to attempt before the start of a new adventure for all of us.” 

Both brothers are expected to see out the remainder of their 2026 campaigns before shifting their focus to preparations for their AMA SuperMotocross debut in 2027.
