In the 11 seasons of Formula E, we have had 10 different Driver World Champions. Only one driver has won twice. But who were they? And where are they now?

In the opening Formula E season, Nelson Piquet Jr was crowned the World Champion whilst driving for China Racing. Now Piquet races in Stock car racing with Scuderia Bandeiras Sport. He competes specifically in the Stock car pro series where he is currently 8th in the championship and has taken one win so far.
Our second World Champion came in the 2015/16 season, e. Dams Renault driver Sebastian Buemi. Buemi is still competing in Formula E and has been since the opening season in 2014. He now competes for Envision Racing. In the 2024/25 season, he took one win and three podiums. In 2025, Buemi also competed in the World Endurance Championship under the Hypercar class category. He raced for Toyota Gazoo Racing, taking one podium at the season finale in Bahrain. Buemi is also an Oracle Redbull Racing development driver.
The third World Champion came in the third Formula E season. Lucas di Grassi clinched the title at the final round of the season, racing for Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport. As of 2025, di Grasi is still a Formula E driver. For the 2024/25 season, he raced for Lola Yamaha ABT and is sticking with them for 2025/26. In the 2024/25 season, he scored one podium in Miami, where he finished second. Overall he finished 17th in the championship.

In the 2017/18 season, we crowned our fourth different World Champion, Jean-Eric Vergne. At the time, he was racing for TeCheetah. Vergne is the only driver to have won two Formula E World Championships, crowning his second back-to-back in the 2018/19 season. Nowadays, he is still racing in Formula E. In the 2024/25 season, he raced for DS Penske, where he scored one 2nd place and one 3rd place finish. For the 2025/26 season, he will continue in Formula E, however, he has switched over to race for Citroen Racing. Also in 2025, Vergne competed in the World Endurance Championship where he raced for Peugeot TotalEnergies, scoring one 2nd place podium at Fuji.
Our next World Champion came in the 2019/20 season, driving for DS TeCheetah, Antonio Felix da Costa. He won the title with two races left in the season and had a formidable season overall. Da Costa has continued in Formula E, racing the 2024/25 season for Tag Heuer Porsche, scoring four podiums and coming 5th in the championship overall. His best results came in the opening two rounds, Sao Paulo and Mexico, scoring 2nd place at both. He also completed one race in the IMSA Sportscar championship within the LMP2 category this season. Going into 2026, da Costa will be racing in two championships. He is continuing with Formula switching teams to race for Jaguar TCS Racing, and will also be racing in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine Endurance Team.

In 2021, we crowned our sixth World Champion, Nyck de Vries. When he won the championship, he was racing with the Mercedes-EQ Formula E team. In his winning season, he took four podiums but also had three retirements. In 2025, de Vries continued to race in Formula E, after a short stint in Formula One back in 2023. For the 2024/25 season, he raced for Mahindra Racing, taking three 2nd-place podiums, two of them being at the final rounds in London. Going into the next Formula E season, de Vries will be continuing with Mahindra. Along with his commitment to Formula E, de Vries also competed in the World Endurance Championship for Toyota Gazoo Racing, where he and his teammates took victory at the final round in Bahrain.
In the 2021/22 season, Mercedes-EQ continued with their success, this time taking driver Stoffel Vandoorne to the championship. He had a successful season taking eight podiums, with one win in Monaco. Despite all this, he didn’t clinch the title until the final round. In 2024/25 Vandoorne continued with Formula E, racing for Maserati Racing, where he took one win at the Tokyo Eprix. Also in 2025, Vandoorne competed in the World Endurance Championship. He raced for Peugeot TotalEnergies, where the car took one podium at the round in COTA. Along with these commitments, he is also a test and reserve driver for Aston Martin Formula One Team.
The next World Champion came in the following season in the form of Jake Dennis for Andretti Formula E team. In his winning season, he took eleven podiums, with the majority being for 2nd place. In 2025, he continued with Formula E and with Andretti (for the 2024/25 and the 2025/26 seasons). In his most recent season, he finished 7th in the championship with a singular 2nd place in Berlin. Alongside this, he competed in multiple GT World Challenge Europe cups for Paradine Racing. For a third role, he has been working with Oracle Redbull Racing as a development driver.

In the 2023/24 season, it was Tag Heuer Porsche’s time to crown a champion. Their driver, Pascal Wehrlein won the championship at the final round in London. For the 2024/25 season, Wehrlein continued racing in Formula E with Porsche throughout the season, he took six podiums with one win in Miami. Wehrlein will remain in Formula E for the 2025/26 season, remaining with the Porsche Formula E team. Also in 2025, Wehrlein competed in one round of IMSA with JDC-Miller Motorsports and one round of the World Endurance Championship with Porsche Penske Motorsports.
Our most recent world champion is Oliver Rowland. In the 2024/25 season, Rowland won the championship whilst racing for Nissan Formula E team. He had a successful season, taking a total of seven podiums, with four of those being wins. For the next racing season, Rowland will be continuing in Formula E with Nissan.
