Who is Maya Weug?
Maya Weug is a Ferrari Academy driver who has just finished her second season in F1 Academy. She was born on the 1st of June 2004, in Pedreguer, Spain. She holds triple nationality, being Dutch, Belgian, and Spanish. She has a Dutch father and a Belgian mother, giving her this unique nationality. Although she was born in Spain, she races under the Dutch flag for F1A. Throughout her racing career, she has raced under all 3 flags to show her heritage and relation to the flags, but ultimately chose the Dutch flag for F1, Academy, which matches her current team, MP Motorsport.
Maya Weug’s F1A experience
Maya Weug joined F1A in 2024 with Prema Racing and was also racing under the Ferrari Driver Academy. Once signed for Ferrari's driver Academy, she became the first female driver to race under them. In 2024, Maya Weug ended the season in 3rd, with eight podiums and a fastest lap to her name. She also got her maiden win in Race Three of Abu Dhabi. After the 2024 season, Maya decided not to continue racing with Prema and swapped to MP Motorsport for the 2025 season. Running in 2nd, behind Doriane Pin, Maya Weug managed to get her first win of the season at Race Two in Jeddah. She then went on to win her home race in Race Two at Zaandvoort. After that, she went on to get her third win of the season in Race Two at Singapore. This season, she finished a tight second place behind the Championship winner Doriane Pin, the title fight going until the last race of the season.
Maya Weug’s Motorsports career
Maya Weug gained a passion for racing through karting when she was seven. Originally starting karting for fun, without competing, but she slowly started drifting into karting championships. After a couple of years competing in national series and making impressions in 2015, Maya moved to more regional championships. She placed second in the Spanish Karting Championship and stepped into the international scene for the following season, where she competed in the WSK Final Cup, finishing ahead of Dino Beganovic, a current F2 driver. In 2020, she placed 17th in the World Karting Championship. After being told she was shortlisted for the FIA Women in Motorsport program, Weug progressed to the final stage, where she competed against Doriane Pin, Julia Ayoub, and Antonella Bassani. In mid-January 2021, Weug was announced the winner and awarded a spot in the Ferrari Driver Academy.
Moving into her single-seater career, Weug started with Italian F4, racing with Iron Dames, who were connected to her FDA role. She had a strong debut season, picking up three rookie podiums in Le Castellet, Misano, and Vallelungo but missed out on scoring points in the main championship, finishing 35th. Maya had also taken part in some German F4 races throughout the year. Taking a couple of top 10 finishes and top 5 finishes, Maya had improved since the previous season and ended up 14th in the standings with Iron Dames, finishing ahead of teammate Ivan Domingues. In 2023, Weug stepped up into the Formula Regional European Championship, alongside KIC Motorsport. Her standout weekend came at Spa-Francochamps, where she took a victory followed by a sixth-place finish in Race 2. Clearing her name as the only driver from her team to score points. Placing 17th out of 42 drivers, but third among rookies. In 2024, Weug had made serious progress and joined F1A under Prema Racing whilst she continued to develop under the Ferrari Driver Academy. She went into 2025 with a third-place finish in the standings. For the 2025 season, Maya decided to change teams from Prema to MP Motorsports. In an interview with F1A, she stated, “I needed a change. I think we got the opportunity from them as well to drive for them; they are a Dutch team. I think they have been strong. They have a lot of experience also in F4, as they do Spanish F4 instead of Italian F4, but they have a lot of experience. For me, I just needed a bit of a change to see if that would help my results, and a bit of a fresh start is always good sometimes.”
Maya Weug, where to next?
Currently, Maya Weug has not released her plans on where she will be competing next year.
From the team at TRR, we wish her the best in her future motorsports career and congratulate her on her achievements in the F1 Academy.
